Chapter 16 - Evelyn's Second Birthday

The crisp, golden leaves of autumn once again returned to the Oakhaven countryside, marking a full two years since the chaotic day of the federal raid and my daughter’s dramatic entry into the world.
We celebrated Evelyn’s second birthday in Nora’s backyard, keeping true to our promise of making it an ordinary, joyful family affair.
There were no massive crystal chandeliers, no caterers in black tie, and no terrifying surprises waiting behind closed doors. Just a colorful paper banner strung between two maple trees, a homemade chocolate cake covered in slightly lopsided blue frosting, and six neighborhood children chasing golden retriever puppies across the grass.
Evelyn, wearing a bright pink party dress and a silver paper crown, sat at a small picnic table, furiously smashing a slice of chocolate cake into her mouth with absolute, unadulterated glee.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..." we all sang loudly, clapping our hands as Evelyn gleefully slammed her hands down into the frosting, sending chocolate flying everywhere.
My father laughed uproariously, wiping a stray smudge of frosting off his cheek, while Nora clicked away with her camera, capturing every messy, beautiful second of the celebration.
I stood beside the picnic table, holding a small paper plate, looking down at my daughter.
Two years ago, I had been lying on a hardwood floor, bleeding and terrified, wondering if my baby would survive the cruelty of a man who viewed her as a pawn. Now, she was laughing, running, and growing up in a world filled with genuine, unconditional love.
Evelyn suddenly looked up at me, her face completely smeared with chocolate, and reached her sticky little arms out toward me.
"Up, Mommy! Up!" she demanded happily.

I didn't hesitate. I scooped her up into my arms, pressing her close against my chest, ignoring the chocolate smearing onto my favorite blouse.
"Happy birthday, my sweet, brave girl," I whispered into her dark hair, kissing her cheek.
