Chapter 14 - The Healing Garden

|
With the spring weather settling into a warm, inviting embrace, my father decided that the backyard of Nora’s house needed a proper vegetable and flower garden.
He spent three consecutive weekends digging up the soil, mixing rich compost, and planting rows of tomatoes, bell peppers, and vibrant, colorful marigolds.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, I sat on the wooden porch watching him teach two-year-old Evelyn how to gently press a tiny sunflower seed into the rich, dark dirt.
"Push it down just an inch, sweet girl, right into the earth," my father instructed patiently, guiding Evelyn’s tiny, chubby hand with his calloused fingers. "There you go. Now cover it up with a little soil."
Evelyn giggled delightedly, clapping her hands together with dirt-smudged fingers. "More dirt, Grandpa! More dirt!"
Nora walked out of the back door carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade and three plastic cups, smiling warmly at the sight of the two of them.
"If she keeps digging up your flower beds, Dad, you're going to have a farm instead of a garden," Nora teased, handing him a cup of lemonade.
"Let her dig," my father chuckled, taking a sip and wiping his brow. "A child who plays in the dirt is a child who knows how to grow. This earth is honest, Nora. It gives back exactly what you put into it."
I took a cup of lemonade from Nora, sitting back in the wooden rocking chair and closing my eyes to feel the warm spring breeze brush against my face.

For so long, I had lived in a world where everything was fake. Fake smiles, fake marriages, fake wealth, fake security. Every single thing in the Vance household had been a performance designed to protect an illusion.
Here, sitting on a simple wooden porch with my father, my sister, and my daughter, everything was real. The dirt was real. The sun was real. The love we shared was absolute and unshakeable.
