Chapter 11: What Remains

One year later, Elena stood in the nursery of her new apartment, watching Aurora sleep in the crib.

The scars on her palm from the broken bed rail had faded into thin white lines. They no longer hurt when the weather changed. Some nights, though, she still dreamed of the flatline alarm and the sound of steel snapping.

Preston had spent the past year in intensive therapy. He sent letters she did not open and updates about Aurora’s visits that she did read carefully. He never asked for a second chance out loud. He simply showed up, on time, every single week, and proved through action that he was trying to become someone different.

Elena did not know if she would ever let him fully back in.

But she no longer hated him.

She had survived the worst night of her life. She had protected her daughter with everything she had—including the strength to break solid steel when the pain demanded it.

And that strength was still hers.

She leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Aurora’s forehead.

“We’re okay,” she whispered. “We’re going to be more than okay.”

Outside the window, the city lights glittered like distant stars.

Elena closed the nursery door gently and walked into the quiet living room of the life she was building on her own terms.

She had almost died in that delivery room.

Instead, she had been reborn.

And this time, no one would ever hold her down again.
