Chapter 7: The Breaking Point

The delivery room became a battlefield of pure will.
Elena begged.
Preston remained ice.
Khloe performed her soft, tearful performance about the knocked-over tray.
The nurses followed orders.
When the contraction hit that finally snapped the steel rail, Elena no longer cared about dignity or appearance. She only cared about surviving long enough to push her child into the world.
The baby’s first cry was the last clear sound she heard before the alarms started.
She felt herself sliding under, the pain and the blood loss and the betrayal all blending into one dark wave.
