Chapter 9: The Truth Unravels

While Elena recovered, the truth about Khloe began to surface in pieces.

A nurse who had always liked Elena quietly told Maya that Khloe had been the one to suggest turning off the epidural “to speed things up.” Another staff member mentioned that Khloe had been seen deleting messages from Preston’s phone on more than one occasion.

Then the private investigator Maya hired delivered the real blow.

Khloe had been systematically isolating Preston from Elena for months. She had fabricated stories about Elena checking up on him, about Elena being unstable, about Elena possibly lying about the pregnancy timeline. She had even gone so far as to plant doubt about the baby’s paternity in casual conversations with other staff.

Preston, exhausted from work and already under pressure from his own ambitious family, had believed the slow drip of poison.

When Elena finally allowed him into the room on the sixth day, he looked like a man who had aged ten years.

He stood at the foot of her bed, hands clenched at his sides, and said the only words that mattered.

“I almost killed you. And I will never forgive myself for that.”

Elena looked at him for a long time.

“I don’t need your forgiveness of yourself,” she said quietly. “I need you to understand that the man who stood in that delivery room and ordered them to hold me down is not a man I can share a life with. Not yet. Maybe not ever.”
