Chapter 10: The Ambush at the Crossroads

The military convoy rolled out of the safe house gates under the cover of dusk, two matte-black utility vehicles cutting through the winding mountain roads with their headlights switched off, relying on night-vision optics. Elena sat in the back of the lead vehicle, her hand resting reassuringly over Chloe’s trembling fingers. The encrypted hard drives were secured in a reinforced metal case locked to Elena's wrist by a steel cable.
"We're ten miles out from the federal checkpoint," Miller announced from the front passenger seat, monitoring the tactical map display. "Route is clear so far."
Suddenly, the vehicle's onboard radar system beeped frantically, flashing a red warning light across the dashboard.
"Ambush!" the driver shouted, slamming on the brakes as two heavy black SUVs materialized out of a side logging road, cutting off the highway ahead of them and blocking both lanes.
Before the convoy could reverse, two more vehicles pulled up directly behind them, trapping them in a classic tactical pincer movement. The doors of the surrounding SUVs flew open, and armed men in tactical gear stepped out, brandishing weapons with practiced precision. But they weren't military personnel or local police—they were private security contractors working directly for the Vance Foundation's high-priced security wing.
"Stay down!" Elena ordered instantly, pushing Chloe flat against the reinforced floorboards of the vehicle.
Miller unholstered his sidearm, checking the chamber with a sharp click. "General, we've been compromised. They tracked our satellite signature."
Elena didn't panic. Her tactical training kicked in with icy perfection. She popped the vehicle's side hatch, stepping out onto the asphalt with her uniform insignia gleaming under the pale moonlight. She raised her hand, projecting her voice with the booming, absolute authority of a commanding officer.
"Stand down! You are committing an act of treason against federal officers and military personnel!" Elena commanded, her voice cutting sharply through the roar of idling engines.
The lead security contractor, a burly man with a scarred cheek, lowered his weapon slightly but did not retreat. "General Vance. Step away from the vehicle. Hand over the case. This is a private matter concerning Vance Foundation property, and we have orders to retrieve it."

From behind the lead vehicle, another car door opened, and a familiar, elegant figure stepped out into the chilly night air. Eleanor Vance-Sterling stood tall, wrapped in a heavy wool coat, her pearl necklace gleaming against the dark fabric. She walked forward with calculated steps, her expression a mix of triumph and cold malice.
"You really thought you could outsmart me, Elena?" Eleanor called out, stopping a safe distance from the military convoy. "You brought a handful of soldiers to fight a war funded by billions of dollars. Hand over the girl and the files, and perhaps I'll let you retire quietly without a dishonorable discharge."
