Chapter 13: Dawn of Accountability

The federal courthouse in downtown Washington, D.C., loomed like a fortress of white marble against the gray morning sky. Inside the secure briefing rooms, the atmosphere was a whirlwind of activity. Federal prosecutors, forensic accountants, and military investigators poured over the digital hard drives that Elena had delivered directly into their custody. The encrypted files provided an airtight paper trail, exposing decades of embezzlement, corporate fraud, and the criminal conspiracy surrounding the death of Elena's late husband.
Elena sat at a polished oak table in a private conference room, wearing her dress uniform with all the polished buttons and service medals catching the morning light streaming through the tall arched windows. Chloe sat beside her, sipping a cup of coffee, looking rested and healthy for the first time in months. The color had returned to her cheeks, and the perpetual shadow of fear in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, resilient strength.
The heavy door opened, and Chief Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance—unrelated to the corrupt family dynasty—stepped into the room, carrying a thick leather binder. He offered Elena a respectful nod before taking a seat opposite them.
"General Vance, Ms. Vance," the prosecutor began, opening the binder. "We have spent the last twenty-four hours verifying the data on the drives you provided. The financial ledgers are completely authentic. We have already frozen all assets tied to the Vance Foundation and issued federal indictments against Eleanor Vance-Sterling and three primary board members for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and obstruction of justice."
"What about the investigation into my husband's death?" Elena asked, her voice steady and controlled.
"The internal memos you recovered explicitly outline the tampering of the vehicle's brake lines," the prosecutor confirmed, looking up solemnly. "We have reopened the case as a capital homicide investigation. Based on the signed communications, Eleanor ordered the operation herself. She will never see freedom again."
Chloe let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning her head against her mother's shoulder. Elena wrapped her arm around her daughter, kissing her forehead gently. The nightmare that had haunted their family for years was finally reaching its legal and moral conclusion.
"When does the public arraignment begin?" Elena asked.

"In two hours," the prosecutor replied. "Eleanor's legal team has already attempted every maneuver in the book, but the federal judge denied bail outright given the flight risk and the severity of the charges. She will face trial on all counts."
Elena stood up, smoothing the front of her uniform jacket. "We will be in the courtroom."
