Chapter 8: The Net Tightens

Back in the city, inside the towering glass monolith of the Vance Foundation headquarters, panic was setting in. Eleanor Vance-Sterling paced the length of her executive penthouse office, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the imported Italian marble floor. Her phone pressed tightly against her ear, her face pale beneath layers of expensive cosmetics.

"What do you mean she's gone?" Eleanor hissed into the receiver, her voice sharp enough to shatter glass. "I gave explicit instructions to lock down that entire floor! Private security was supposed to monitor every exit!"

On the other end of the line, the nervous hospital administrator stammered apologies, explaining the sudden appearance of federal military transport and the invocation of emergency federal jurisdiction.

Eleanor dropped the phone onto her polished mahogany desk, her chest heaving with suppressed rage. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the ant-like flow of traffic miles below. She had spent forty years building this empire, burying scandals, buying politicians, and manipulating every legal safeguard imaginable. She had thought herself untouchable. But she had underestimated Elena Vance—a woman molded by military discipline and fueled by maternal fury.

She punched a button on her desk intercom. "Get Marcus in here immediately."

A moment later, the heavy oak doors of the office opened, and Marcus Vance, Eleanor’s eldest grandson and the current CEO of the foundation, stepped inside. He looked anxious, clutching a leather portfolio tightly against his chest.

"Grandma, you wanted to see me?" Marcus asked, his voice trembling slightly.

"Elena has taken Chloe," Eleanor said, turning around to face him, her eyes burning with cold malice. "And more importantly, Chloe accessed the secure terminal before we could wipe the drive. They have the financial records. They have the internal memos."

Marcus went pale, taking a step backward. "The memos? The ones regarding... everything?"

"Yes, those memos," Eleanor snapped. "If those files reach federal prosecutors, we aren't just talking about financial fraud. We are talking about federal penitentiaries. All of us."

"What do we do?" Marcus asked, his panic rising. "We can't fight the military. If Elena has federal backing, local judges won't touch this."

Eleanor walked slowly toward him, her expression hardening into a dangerous resolve. "We don't fight them in court, Marcus. We control the narrative. We brand Elena as a rogue military officer suffering from severe combat-related psychological trauma, abusing her authority to abduct a mentally unstable dependent. We file emergency injunctions alleging erratic behavior and security risks. And most importantly... we find them before they reach the Department of Justice."
