Chapter 14 - Ryan’s Final Lie

Victor and Susan were both arrested.

Susan admitted altering hospital records and helping Victor hide surveillance evidence.

She also revealed that Victor had funded Ryan’s appeal and ordered the threats against Emily.

The appeal collapsed.

But Ryan requested one final meeting with Emily.

She almost refused.

Then his attorney delivered a handwritten note.

There is something about your mother that James never told you.

Emily brought the note to her father.

James became silent.

Her mother, Catherine Bennett, had died when Emily was twelve. Emily had always been told it was a car accident.

That was only part of the truth.

Catherine had been driving away from James after years of arguments caused by his long deployments.

“She was leaving me,” James admitted. “I begged her to stay. She drove away angry, and the accident happened thirty minutes later.”

“You let me believe everything was perfect.”

“I wanted you to remember her without our mistakes.”

Ryan had learned the truth from Linda, who had discovered old legal documents while searching James’s house years earlier.

At the prison meeting, Ryan smiled when Emily entered.

“Now you know your father lies too.”

Emily sat across from him.

“Yes. He lied because he was ashamed.”

Ryan’s smile widened.

“So he’s no better than us.”

“No,” Emily said. “He told the truth when I confronted him.”

She stood.

“You only tell the truth when it can hurt someone.”

Ryan pressed both hands against the glass.

“You can’t keep my son from me forever!”

Emily met his eyes without fear.

“Noah stopped being your weapon the day I survived you.”

She walked away.

Ryan shouted after her.

But she never turned around.
