Chapter 9 - The Hidden Recording

The apartment had remained empty since Ryan’s arrest.

Yet someone had recently cleaned it.

Fresh food filled the refrigerator.

A child’s car seat stood beside the door.

Inside the nursery, Emily found a blue blanket identical to the one Noah slept with every night.

She backed away in horror.

“They’ve been inside our house,” she said. “They know what he uses.”

James searched the room while Detective Torres photographed everything.

Behind the crib, he noticed a loose electrical outlet.

Inside it was a tiny memory card.

Victor had missed it when removing the building’s surveillance records.

The card contained a recording from eight months before Ryan’s arrest.

Ryan stood in the apartment kitchen with Linda and Victor.

Emily was asleep in the bedroom.

Ryan’s voice was clear.

“She keeps threatening to leave.”

Linda folded her arms.

“Then make sure she can’t.”

Victor warned them that neighbors were asking questions.

Ryan laughed.

“She has nowhere to go. Her father thinks she’s happy.”

Then Linda said something that froze Emily’s blood.

“If the baby is born, Ryan controls her forever.”

The recording proved Victor knew about the abuse.

But it revealed something else.

Victor had answered:

“Only if the baby is actually Ryan’s.”

The video ended seconds later.

Emily stared at the blank screen.

James slowly turned toward her.

“Emily,” he asked carefully, “what did he mean?”

She had no answer.

Because until that moment, she had never questioned who Noah’s father was.
