Chapter 1
My mother-in-law shoved me down the stairs while I was eight months pregnant—then told my husband I had thrown myself down to frame her.
It happened at my husband Ethan’s family home outside Boston.
I was carrying a box of baby clothes upstairs when Margaret blocked my way.
“You really think having his baby makes you family?”
I tried to walk past her.
“Please, Margaret. I don’t want another argument.”
She grabbed my wrist.
“You’ve been turning my son against me since the wedding.”
I pulled away and reached for the railing.
Then she shoved me.
I remember missing the first step.
Then another.
Then everything spun.
I landed at the bottom with both hands wrapped around my stomach.
“My baby…”
Margaret slowly walked down the stairs.
She didn’t call 911.
She leaned over me and whispered, “Tell Ethan you slipped.”
I screamed for help.
That was when Ethan rushed through the front door.
He dropped beside me.
“What happened?”
Before I could answer, Margaret started crying.
“She threw herself down!”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“She pushed me.”
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Ethan, she’s trying to destroy our family.”
At the hospital, doctors rushed me into an exam room while Ethan stayed outside with his mother.
When he finally came in, he wouldn’t look at me.
“My mom says you threatened to blame her.”
I felt colder than I had on those stairs.
“You believe her?”
He said nothing.
The next morning, Margaret arrived with an attorney and papers claiming I was unstable and dangerous around my unborn child.
Then she smiled and whispered, “Nobody saw what happened.”
I almost believed her.
Until a nurse entered my room holding my phone.
“There’s a video your neighbor sent you.”
I opened it with shaking hands.
Her doorbell camera pointed directly through Margaret’s front window toward the staircase.
The footage clearly showed Margaret putting both hands on my back.

And instead of stopping his mother, he looked straight at her and nodded.
