Chapter 10

Five years had passed since that day in the garden.

Five years of love.

Of healing.

Of new beginnings.

Arthur and I were happier than ever.

We'd traveled.

We'd gardened.

We'd loved.

We'd built a life together that was beyond anything I'd ever imagined.

Daniel had met someone.

A wonderful woman named Sophia.

Kind.

Smart.

Funny.

She was a doctor.

She treated me with respect.

With love.

She never tried to come between Daniel and me.

If anything, she brought us closer.

They'd married two years ago.

In the same garden.

Under the same rose arch.

It had been a beautiful day.

Full of joy.

Full of hope.

And last year, they'd given me the greatest gift of all.

A granddaughter.

Lila.

Named after my mother.

She was perfect.

Ten fingers.

Ten toes.

A head full of dark hair.

And the brightest blue eyes I'd ever seen.

I was in love.

Completely.

Utterly.

In love.

Today was Lila's first birthday.

The garden was decorated for the party.

Balloons.

Streamers.

A birthday cake.

Family and friends gathered.

Daniel and Sophia.

Arthur's children and their families.

Margaret and her new partner.

Our friends from the support group.

Neighbors.

Everyone we loved.

Everyone who loved us.

I held Lila in my arms.

She snuggled against my chest.

Her tiny hand playing with the pendant around my neck.

The one made from my hair.

From my memories.

From my strength.

"She loves that necklace," Sophia said.

Smiling.

"She loves anything shiny," I said.

Lila giggled.

A beautiful, infectious sound.

I kissed the top of her head.

Inhaled her sweet baby scent.

Daniel came over.

Put an arm around Sophia.

Looked at his daughter.

Looked at me.

"Mom, can I talk to you for a minute?"

"Of course, baby."

I handed Lila to Sophia.

Walked with Daniel to the rose arch.

The same spot where so much had happened.

Where Vanessa's lies had been exposed.

Where Arthur and I had married.

Where Daniel and Sophia had married.

Where our new life had begun.

"What is it?" I asked.

He took a deep breath.

"I just... I need you to know how grateful I am. For everything. For being my mom. For never giving up on me. For forgiving me when I doubted you."

Tears filled my eyes.

"Daniel, there's nothing to forgive."

"There is," he said.

"I let that woman come between us. I believed her lies. I hurt you. And you... you loved me anyway. You forgave me. You welcomed me back with open arms."

He pulled something from his pocket.

A small envelope.

Handed it to me.

"What's this?"

"Open it."

I opened the envelope.

Pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Unfolded it.

It was a deed.

To the house and garden.

But it wasn't just in my name anymore.

It was in my name.

And Arthur's name.

And Daniel's name.

And Sophia's name.

And Lila's name.

"Daniel..."

"This place is our legacy, Mom," he said.

"Yours and Dad's. And now it's ours. All of ours. It will never be taken from us. It will stay in the family. Forever. For Lila. And for her children. And their children. This garden. This house. This love. It's forever."

Tears streamed down my face.

Happy tears.

Grateful tears.

I threw my arms around my son.

Held him tight.

"Thank you," I whispered.

"Thank you for everything."

"Thank you," he said.

"For being my mom."

We stood there for a long time.

Hugging.

Crying.

Loving.

Then we rejoined the party.

The cake was brought out.

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday."

Lila, confused but delighted, smashed her tiny hand into the cake.

Everyone laughed.

Everyone cheered.

Arthur came over.

Put an arm around my waist.

"Everything okay?"

"Everything's perfect," I said.

I looked around the garden.

At the roses my husband had planted.

At the roses Arthur had planted.

At the house that held all my memories.

At my son.

Holding his daughter.

Laughing with his wife.

At my husband.

Standing beside me.

Holding me close.

Loving me.

I touched the pendant at my throat.

Felt the weight of it.

The history.

The love.

The strength.

Thirty-eight years of marriage to Robert.

Five years of marriage to Arthur.

A lifetime of love and loss and hope and healing.

Vanessa had tried to destroy me.

She'd cut my hair.

She'd told lies.

She'd tried to steal my home.

My son.

My dignity.

But she'd failed.

She'd only made me stronger.

Only made my family closer.

Only made my love deeper.

I looked up at the sky.

Somewhere, I knew Robert was watching.

Smiling.

Proud.

I kept my promise to him.

Grief had never made me smaller.

It had made me stronger.

And now I was surrounded by love.

By family.

By joy.

By everything that mattered.

Lila reached for me.

I took her from Daniel.

Held her close.

She snuggled against my chest.

Her tiny hand once again finding my pendant.

I kissed her forehead.

Whispered to her.

"You are loved, little one. You are safe. You are home. And nothing and no one will ever take that away from you."

Arthur kissed my cheek.

Daniel smiled at me.

Sophia squeezed my hand.

The sun was shining.

The roses were blooming.

The party continued around us.

Laughter.

Music.

Joy.

This was my happy ending.

Not the ending I'd imagined thirty-eight years ago.

Not the ending I'd hoped for when I sat by my husband's hospital bed.

But it was mine.

Perfect.

Beautiful.

Whole.

May you like

And I was finally, completely, utterly at peace.

The end.
