Chapter 2

Daniel didn't move.

He just stood there.

Suitcase in hand.

Staring.

Vanessa was mid-snip when she felt the change in the air.

She turned.

The scissors still in her hand.

A lock of my silver hair caught between the blades.

Her face went through a dozen emotions in three seconds.

Surprise.

Confusion.

Fear.

Then, quickly, calculation.

"Daniel!" she said.

Her voice bright.

Too bright.

"You're home early!"

She lowered the scissors.

Tried to step away from me.

Tried to make it look like nothing was wrong.

Chloe fumbled with her phone.

Tried to stop the recording.

Too late.

Daniel's eyes moved from Vanessa.

To the scissors.

To the clumps of my hair scattered across the grass and rose bushes.

To me.

Sitting in the chair.

My hair now uneven.

Lopsided.

Ruined.

His mother.

The woman who had raised him.

Who had worked three jobs to put him through college.

Who had supported him through every failed startup until he finally succeeded.

"What is going on here?"

His voice was low.

Dangerous.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Nothing, baby. Your mom and I were just... bonding. She wanted a new look for the wedding. Right, Mrs. Hale?"

She looked at me.

Eyes pleading.

Threatening.

I said nothing.

Just looked at my son.

Let him see the truth in my face.

"She wanted a new look?" Daniel repeated.

He stepped into the garden.

Set down his suitcase.

"With you holding the scissors? And Chloe recording? That's how she wanted it?"

"Well..." Vanessa faltered.

"She's been feeling old-fashioned lately," Chloe piped up.

Wrong move.

Daniel's head snapped toward her.

"Nobody asked you."

Chloe shrank back.

Vanessa recovered.

Stepped toward Daniel.

Reached for his arm.

"Baby, you're tired. You just got off a flight. Let's go inside and I'll explain everything."

Daniel pulled his arm away.

"I'm not going anywhere until I understand why my mother is sitting in my garden with her hair cut off against her will."

"Against her will?" Vanessa laughed.

It was a sharp, ugly sound.

"She asked me to do it! Didn't you, Mrs. Hale? Tell him."

She looked at me again.

This time, the threat was clear.

If I didn't play along, there would be consequences.

I stood up slowly.

Felt the weight of what had just happened.

Thirty-eight years of hair.

Thirty-eight years of memories.

Scattered across the grass like trash.

"Daniel," I said.

My voice was steady.

Calm.

"Vanessa came to me this morning. Said she wanted to help me 'prepare' for the wedding. She brought Chloe. They started cutting my hair. They've been recording it."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"That's not true! She's lying! She's always lying! You know how she is, Daniel. Confused. Unstable. She probably doesn't even remember what happened."

I reached into my pocket.

Pulled out my phone.

Opened the security camera app.

Held it up so Daniel could see.

The screen showed the garden.

Live feed.

Vanessa and Chloe.

The scissors.

The recording phones.

Every second of it.

Vanessa went white.

"You said those were disconnected," she whispered.

"I lied," I said.

Daniel looked from the phone screen to Vanessa.

The pieces were falling into place.

Six months of stories.

Six months of tension between us.

Six months of his mother being painted as the villain.

All of it unraveling in seconds.

"Is it true?" he asked Vanessa.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"Did you cut her hair against her will?"

"Daniel, let me explain—"

"Did you?"

She flinched.

Then her face hardened.

If she couldn't lie her way out, she would attack.

"So what if I did?" she snapped. "Look at her! She looks like a grieving ghost! It's embarrassing! I'm marrying into this family, and I won't have my wedding photos ruined by her depression!"

Daniel stared at her.

Like he was seeing her for the first time.

"The pregnancy," he said.

Vanessa's hand went instinctively to her stomach.

"What about it?"

"Is that real?"

She hesitated.

Just a fraction of a second.

But Daniel saw it.

"Of course it's real," she said. "I'm carrying your child."

I pulled the clinic invoice from my other pocket.

The one I'd found in my study.

The one for a contraceptive implant.

Dated two weeks ago.

I handed it to Daniel.

He read it.

His hands began to shake.

"Vanessa?"

She backed away.

"That's... that's not mine. She planted it. She's been trying to ruin me since the day we met!"

"The jewelry," I said softly.

"My mother's engagement ring. Your grandmother's pearl necklace. The two antique watches that disappeared. Where are they, Vanessa?"

"I don't know what you're talking about!"

"The safe in your apartment," I said.

"I had a locksmith open it yesterday. When you were at your dress fitting. Everything was there. The jewelry. The papers you forged with my signature. Everything."

Vanessa's face crumpled.

The mask was slipping.

The woman Daniel thought he loved was disappearing.

Revealing something ugly underneath.

"Daniel," she said.

Her voice trembling.

"Baby, I can explain. I did it all for us. For our future. Your mother was never going to accept me. She was never going to let us be happy. I had to—"

"Get out," Daniel said.

His voice was ice.

"What?"

"Get out of my garden. Get out of my life. Get out before I call the police."

Vanessa stared at him.

Tears streamed down her face.

But they didn't move me.

I'd seen those tears before.

Used to manipulate.

Used to deceive.

"You're making a mistake," she said.

"I don't think so," Daniel said.

He looked at Chloe.

"You too. Take your sister and leave. And if either of you ever comes near my mother again, you'll regret it."

Chloe grabbed Vanessa's arm.

Pulled her toward the gate.

Vanessa went.

But not before looking back at me.

Hatred in her eyes.

This wasn't over.

Not by a long shot.

But for the first time in six months, I breathed easy.

May you like

My son was home.

And he finally knew the truth.
