Chapter 4 - The Siege of Blackwood

4 - 15

The crimson strobe of the master security grid bathed the grand Hawthorne foyer in an eerie, pulsing light. The sudden silence left in the wake of the security chief’s cut-off transmission was shattered seconds later by the muffled, distant thump of a breaching charge detonating near the southern service wing.

"They didn't waste any time," Eleanor noted, her voice entirely devoid of panic. She unzipped her leather satchel with practiced ease, sliding her hand inside to verify the secure flash drive and pulling out a heavy, matte-black polymer Glock 19 with a threaded barrel—a weapon she had disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled inside the staff quarters every night for the past three months.

Daniel Hawthorne stared at the firearm, then up at Eleanor. A wry, dangerous smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "A Hawthorne housekeeper who carries a Glock 19. I’m beginning to think my estate HR department needs a much more thorough background screening process."

"Your HR department nearly got us both killed by hiring me based on a forged résumé," Eleanor retorted sharply, racking the slide with a crisp, metallic snap that echoed off the marble pillars. "Now, unless you plan on negotiating our execution with Richard Vance’s cleanup crew using corporate bylaws, I suggest you show me where the estate’s secondary armory and panic shelter are located."

"Follow me," Daniel commanded, his demeanor shifting instantly from elite CEO to tactical commander.

He punched a concealed biometric keypad disguised as a wooden wall panel beside the grand staircase. With a pneumatic hiss, a heavy steel-reinforced panic door swung open, revealing a concrete-lined corridor equipped with digital surveillance monitors, tactical comms arrays, and a reinforced munitions locker.

As they stepped inside, the monitors flickered to life, displaying live feeds from the estate’s perimeter cameras. The footage revealed a terrifyingly efficient tactical squad—eight operatives clad in unmarked black combat gear, wearing ballistic helmets and wielding suppressed short-barreled rifles—sweeping across the manicured lawns with military precision. They weren't common street thugs; they were high-tier private military contractors, identical in discipline and equipment to the black-ops extraction teams Richard Vance employed for offshore asset protection.

"They're moving through the west conservatory," Daniel muttered, tapping a touchscreen terminal to lock the inner blast shutters. "If they breach the reinforced glass, they'll have direct access to the main corridor leading straight to this panic shelter."

"They aren't going to breach the conservatory," Eleanor said, her eyes fixed on camera feed four, which showed the lead operative planting a shaped linear charge against the oak library doors. "They’re creating a diversion. The heavy assault team is hitting the front entrance to draw our attention, while a two-man sniper and infiltration unit is currently scaling the eastern drainage pipe to access the second-floor balcony directly above us."

Daniel glanced at the secondary monitor. Sure enough, thermal imaging captured two heat signatures moving spider-like up the sheer stone facade of the eastern wing. "You have tactical instincts that far exceed any corporate auditor I’ve ever met, Eleanor."

"Auditing a multi-billion-dollar fraudulent conglomerate requires auditing the men who protect it," she replied coldly. "Give me a rifle and a secure frequency to your remaining security detail."

Daniel tossed her a ruggedized tactical radio headset, which she snapped over her right ear with a swift, practiced motion. He then pulled a customized Heckler & Koch HK416 assault rifle from the munitions rack, checked the magazine, and handed it to her along with two tactical magazines strapped together with industrial electrical tape.

"The security detail is pinned down at the southern gatehouse," Daniel said, racking his own weapon. "It’s just you and me against an eight-man Vance Logistics hit squad."

"Eight men who think they're hunting a frightened whistleblower in a maid’s uniform," Eleanor corrected, a cold, predatory light flashing in her emerald eyes. "Let’s educate them on corporate restructuring."

The heavy oak doors of the master library overhead exploded inward with a deafening roar as the linear charge detonated, showering the lower hallway with splintered wood and plaster dust. Shouting voices—sharp, barked tactical commands in Russian and accented English—echoed down the vaulted staircase.

Eleanor dropped into a low, professional combat stance, her weapon shouldered and leveled at the corridor intersection. Daniel took the flank position, his eyes locked on the blind corner.

The first tactical operative rounded the corner, his rifle raised—and dropped instantly as Eleanor’s suppressed Glock cracked twice with pinpoint, lethal accuracy.

The siege of Blackwood Manor had begun, and Richard Vance was about to learn that his prey had just become the apex predator.
