Chapter 5 - The Crossfire Corridor

5 - 15
The acrid smell of burnt plastic and cordite billowed down the vaulted corridor as the first Vance Logistics operative slumped against the wainscoting, sliding lifelessly onto the Persian runner. The remaining seven mercenaries didn't panic; they operated with the cold, emotionless efficiency of seasoned contractors. Within milliseconds, suppressive fire chewed up the plaster walls, showering the hallway in a blinding storm of drywall dust and flying wood splinters.
"Suppressing fire!" Daniel shouted, leaning around the corner of the panic shelter entrance and unleashing a controlled burst from his HK416. The heavy rounds slammed into the reinforced ballistic shields of the advancing vanguard, forcing them to temporarily take cover behind the marble columns of the portrait gallery.
"They're using level-four plates!" Eleanor yelled over the din of automatic gunfire, pressing her back flat against the concrete reinforcement of the shelter doorway. "Center mass won't drop them! We need leg shots or face exposure!"
"Noted," Daniel replied, sliding a fresh magazine into his rifle with a crisp click. "How many rounds do you have left?"
"Enough to finish the board meeting," Eleanor retorted coldly. She tapped her tactical headset, switching to the closed-circuit comms channel she had covertly mapped into the estate’s router three weeks ago. "Security team Hawthorne actual, this is Porter. If you're still breathing in that gatehouse, I want a coordinated flash-bang deployment across the eastern courtyard in exactly forty seconds. Draw their perimeter reserves away from the main corridor."
A static-heavy, groggy voice crackled through the headset: "Copy that, Porter... initiating secondary diversion now."
Eleanor didn't wait for confirmation. She dropped to one knee, bringing her Glock 19 up in a two-handed combat grip, her breathing slowing to a disciplined, steady rhythm. The tactical hud in her mind mapped every angle of the corridor, calculating ricochet trajectories off the antique bronze statues and marble wainscoting.
Outside in the courtyard, a brilliant flash of magnesium light illuminated the night sky, followed immediately by the concussive BOOM of a high-yield stun grenade. The tactical distraction was immediate and devastating. Shouts of confusion erupted from the Vance operatives holding the hallway as their radio comms buzzed with frantic warnings about an outer perimeter flank attack.
"Moving!" Eleanor barked.
She vaulted out from the shelter entrance, executing a textbook combat roll that brought her behind the heavy mahogany frame of a sixteenth-century Italian tapestry. Two operatives, distracted by the flash-bang echoes behind them, pivoted too late.
Crack-crack.
Two precise rounds caught both mercenaries in the knee joints, dropping them instantly with agonizing cries of pain. Before their squadmates could return fire, Daniel Hawthorne stepped out from the flank, laying down a devastating wall of suppressive fire that pinned the remaining four mercenaries behind a massive marble pillar.
"Two left in the hall!" Daniel called out, advancing with practiced military precision, his assault rifle leveled at the marble column.
"Hold your fire!" Eleanor commanded sharply.
She pulled a compact flash-bang grenade from her tactical belt, pulled the pin with her teeth, and lobbed it in a high, arcing toss directly over the marble column.
CRACK-FLASH!
The blinding white light and deafening concussive wave rocked the corridor. The two remaining operatives staggered out from behind the pillar, their hands flying to their ears, completely disoriented and blind.
Daniel and Eleanor moved as one unit. Two swift butt-strokes to the tactical helmets sent both mercenaries crashing unconscious onto the marble floor.
Within ninety seconds, the entire eight-man Vance Logistics hit squad had been neutralized without a single fatal casualty on the Hawthorne side—a surgical dismantling that left Daniel Hawthorne staring at his housekeeper with a mixture of profound awe and chilling realization.
"Where," Daniel breathed, lowering his rifle as the smoke cleared from the corridor, "did a corporate compliance auditor learn urban combat tactics like that?"
"Auditing offshore cartels in Eastern Europe requires a very specific set of extracurricular skills, Mr. Hawthorne," Eleanor replied smoothly, checking the battery on her encrypted flash drive. "Now, the cleanup crew is handled. But Richard Vance isn't going to send a second squad. Next time, he’s going to use his political leverage to send the National Guard."

Daniel’s jaw tightened into a granite line. He pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, dialing a direct, unlisted number that bypassed every civilian network in the country.
"It’s Hawthorne," Daniel said into the receiver, his voice dropping an octave into pure, lethal authority. "Activate the restructuring protocol. We’re going to audit Vance Logistics—permanently."
