Chapter 2

The Backroom Reckoning

The pristine elegance of the bridal suite was a harsh contrast to the volatile rage vibrating within its walls. Ten minutes after the ceremony dissolved, the heavy mahogany doors were locked from the inside.

Beatrice stood near the vanity mirror, her hands ripping the expensive lace veil from her hair, throwing it onto the floor like a piece of garbage. Her father, Arthur Montgomery, stood near the door, his phone pressed to his ear, barking orders to his legal team to freeze every joint account associated with Julian's name.

Julian sat on a plush velvet sofa in the corner, his tuxedo jacket removed, looking small and defeated. Elena stood near the window, guarded by Officer Vance—a private security detail who had been hired for the wedding but was now acting as a neutral arbiter of the chaos.

"Explain it," Beatrice hissed, walking over to Julian and throwing a crystal vase against the wall right above his head. It shattered into a thousand glittering shards, but Julian didn't even flinch. "Explain how a broke resident from a no-name hospital managed to fool the Montgomery family for over a year!"

"I loved you, Beatrice," Julian said, his voice cracking as he looked up with a desperate, pleading expression. "That part wasn't a lie. I met Elena when I was a student. We were young, we were struggling, and then she got pregnant. I felt trapped. The debt from my medical school was crushing me, and my son... Leo... he was born with a severe congenital heart defect. The medical bills were piling up faster than I could breathe."

"So your solution was to abandon them and find a rich girl to parasite off of?" Beatrice mocked, a bitter, venomous laugh escaping her lips.

"No!" Julian yelled, standing up. "I went to New York to find a private investor. I met your father at that charity gala. When he introduced me to you, and I saw the wealth, the influence... I realized that one stroke of your father's pen could clear my debts, pay for Leo's surgery, and set me up for life. I was going to divorce Elena quietly once the prenuptial agreement funds cleared after our first anniversary. I was going to send her money anonymously!"

Elena let out a sharp, heartbroken sob from the window. "You think money can replace a father, Julian? Leo spent his third birthday in an ICU bed, crying for you! I had to take a job with a traveling catering company just to pay for his oxygen tanks. That’s why I’m here today. I didn't even know it was your wedding until I saw your face on the program list an hour ago!"

Arthur Montgomery slammed his phone down onto the desk. "You're a sociopath, Julian. The prenuptial agreement you signed states that any fraudulent misrepresentation of your legal status invalidates the initial payout. You aren't getting a single penny. In fact, by tomorrow morning, my lawyers will ensure you are barred from practicing medicine in this state."

Julian’s face twisted into absolute panic. "Arthur, please! You can't do that! My career is all I have left!"

"You should have thought about that before you turned my daughter's wedding into a public circus," Arthur growled. He turned to Officer Vance. "Take him out the back exit. If he attempts to contact Beatrice again, use whatever force is necessary."

As Julian was pulled out of the room, his eyes caught Elena's one last time. There was no love left in her gaze—only the cold, hardened resolve of a mother who had finally realized the man she loved was nothing but a beautiful phantom.

Beatrice sank into a chair, her makeup ruined by angry tears. She looked at Elena, the server who had saved her from a lifetime of deception. "What happens to your son now?" Beatrice asked quietly.

Elena wiped her eyes with her stained apron. "I'll find a way, Miss Montgomery. I always do."
