Chapter 6

The True Price of Freedom
The legal aftermath of the airport arrest was swift and merciless. Because Julian had used a forged passport and transported stolen corporate funds across state lines, the federal government took over the case. Julian was denied bail, labeled a high-risk flight danger, and faced up to twenty years in federal prison for identity theft, bigamy, grand larceny, and child endangerment.
Three weeks after the arrest, Beatrice and Elena sat together in the office of the Montgomery Family Foundation. The atmosphere was peaceful, the large windows overlooking Central Park bathed in the warm light of early autumn.
"The federal court has officially returned the two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to our corporate account," Beatrice said, sliding a document toward Elena. "But my father and I have decided that money no longer belongs to the Montgomery family."
Elena blinked, confused. "What do you mean?"
"Julian took that money under the guise of funding medical research," Beatrice explained with a warm smile. "So, we are honoring that intent—but in the right way. The Montgomery Foundation has officially transferred the entire amount into a specialized medical trust for Leo. The deposit has already been sent to Boston Children's Hospital."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at the paperwork, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her pen. "Beatrice... I can't accept this. This is your family’s wealth. I ruined your wedding."
"You didn't ruin my wedding, Elena; you saved my life," Beatrice said gently, reaching across the desk to cover Elena's hand with her own. "If you hadn't walked down that aisle, I would be married to a monster right now. I would have given him access to my family's legacy, and he would have eventually destroyed me the same way he tried to destroy you. This isn't charity. This is a debt of gratitude."
The door to the office opened, and Marcus walked in, carrying Leo on his shoulders. The little boy was giggling, his small hands holding a toy airplane Beatrice had bought him. His breathing looked stronger, the faint blush of color finally returning to his cheeks after his first preparatory treatment session.

"Mommy! Look how high I am!" Leo cheered.
Elena burst into tears, pulling her son down into a tight, fierce embrace. For three long years, she had carried the weight of the world on her shoulders, fighting a lonely battle against poverty, illness, and a phantom husband. Now, the shadow was finally gone.
