Chapter 3

The Scent of Betrayal

The news of the "Bigamist Groom" dominated social media for the next three days. Clips of Elena interrupting the ceremony reached over ten million views on Facebook, with users actively hunting down Julian's professional profiles, forcing the hospital where he worked to suspend him indefinitely pending an ethics investigation.

But while the internet feasted on the drama, the real battle was happening in the corporate boardrooms of Montgomery Holdings.

Beatrice sat in her father's high-rise office, staring at a financial report. Even though the marriage was invalidated, Julian had already been given access to a secondary corporate credit card during the engagement period to help fund his private research laboratory.

"He cleared out the research account, Dad," Beatrice said, her voice hollow. "Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. He withdrew it in cash from three different bank branches the morning of the wedding, right before he walked down the aisle."

Arthur Montgomery slammed his fist onto the glass desk. "He knew he was risking exposure. He took a calculated gamble. If the wedding went through, he'd be a billionaire. If it failed, he had a quarter-million dollars in cash to flee the country."

"We need to find him," Beatrice said, her eyes narrowing with a dangerous intensity. "Not just for the money, but because he owes that money to his son's medical care. If he flees, that child gets nothing, and Julian escapes justice."

Meanwhile, across town in a cramped, drafty apartment, Elena was packing her bags. The landlord had already given her an eviction notice because her check had bounced—the account she shared with Julian had been completely drained weeks ago.

Little Leo sat on the faded linoleum floor, clutching a plastic toy stethoscope, a thin clear tube running from his nose to a portable oxygen concentrator humming in the corner. He was pale, his eyes too large for his small face, but he smiled up at his mother.

"Is Daddy coming home today?" Leo asked, his voice soft and breathless.

Elena felt a sharp pain in her chest, but she forced a bright, loving smile. "No, sweetie. Daddy has to work a very long shift far away. But Mommy is going to take care of you. We're going to a new place where the air is warm."

A sudden, sharp knock at the door broke the quiet rhythm of the apartment. Elena stiffened, her mind immediately racing to debt collectors or Julian returning to demand her silence. She picked up a heavy metal rolling pin from the kitchen counter and approached the door.

"Who is it?" she called out.

"It's Beatrice Montgomery," a voice replied from the hallway. "Please open the door, Elena. I'm alone."
