Chapter 14 — The Third Heir

Chapter 14 — The Third Heir
Samuel gave Evelyn until midnight.
No law enforcement.
No public announcement.
No attempt to trace him.
In return for controlling ownership of Ashford Industries, he would surrender the second archive.
Victoria wanted to negotiate.
Noah wanted to find him.
Lena wanted to treat the exchange as a national security operation.
Evelyn wanted Emma out of the country.
Emma refused to leave.
“Everyone keeps deciding where I go because they’re scared,” she said. “I’m scared too.”
“You’re seven.”
“That doesn’t mean I don’t know when people are lying.”
Evelyn knelt.
“I am trying to protect you.”
“Like Grandpa protected everybody?”
The question cut deeply.
Protection had become the family’s favorite word for control.
Evelyn sent Emma to a secure room inside Meridian headquarters, surrounded by agents she personally selected.
Then she met Samuel at the Ashford family cemetery.
He stood beside Margaret’s grave.
He was sixty, with Gideon’s eyes and a face weathered by years spent outside the photographs of legitimate wealth.
“You look like him,” Evelyn said.
“I spent my life trying not to.”
“Yet you want his company.”
“I want proof I existed.”
“A corporation is not proof.”
“Easy for the daughter in the portrait to say.”
Samuel explained that his mother worked in the Ashford mansion.
Gideon paid her to disappear after Samuel’s birth.
When Samuel was sixteen, he came to the estate and demanded recognition.
Gideon offered him employment instead.
Raymond became his supervisor.
“You knew about my crash,” Evelyn said.
“I knew Gideon wanted you stopped.”
“Did you know they planned to kill me?”
“I knew men like Raymond do not understand moderation.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I was not invited to family decisions.”
“You were close enough to profit from them.”
Samuel smiled.
“So were you.”
Evelyn had built Meridian by purchasing assets during the financial crisis.
Some belonged to families who lost homes.
Some profits came from industries she later criticized.
Samuel used these facts like knives.
Not because they made him innocent.
Because they prevented Evelyn from feeling pure.
“Where is the archive?” she asked.
“Safe.”
“What percentage would satisfy you without control?”
“None.”
“You don’t want justice.”
“No one in this family does. You want revenge shaped like justice. Victoria wants forgiveness shaped like reform. Gideon wants control shaped like protection.”
“And you?”
“I want greed without disguise.”
He handed her a sealed envelope.
Inside was a DNA report.
Samuel was Gideon’s biological son.
There was also a second result.
Nathan was not Raymond Vale’s son.
Margaret’s statement had been based on false records.
Nathan’s biological father was Samuel.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You fathered a child with Victoria?”
Samuel’s face tightened.
“I was nineteen. She was twenty-five. She did not know who I was.”
They had met at a bar outside Bellhaven.
Samuel used his mother’s surname.
Months later, Gideon discovered the pregnancy and realized the truth.
A child conceived by half-siblings would destroy the family publicly.
Gideon hid Nathan’s birth and convinced Victoria he had died.
Raymond later stole the child from the private clinic and raised him as leverage.
Victoria had not merely been hiding an illegitimate son.
She had been hiding a son born from a relationship she never knew was incestuous.
“Does Victoria know?” Evelyn asked.
“No.”
“Does Nathan?”
“No.”
“You’re using this.”
“I’m containing it.”
“You sound like Gideon.”
Samuel’s expression hardened.
“Give me control, and the DNA report disappears with the archive.”
“You want to buy legitimacy with silence.”
“I want what my father denied me.”
A gunshot echoed through the cemetery.
Samuel’s shoulder jerked.
He fell behind Margaret’s grave.
Noah pulled Evelyn down as another bullet struck the stone.
Federal agents moved through the trees.
The sniper escaped.
Samuel survived.
His envelope was gone.
Someone had taken it during the confusion.
Only four people knew about the meeting.
Evelyn.
Noah.
Lena.
Victoria.
When Evelyn returned to Meridian headquarters, the secure room was empty.
Emma’s guards had been drugged.
On the table lay the stolen DNA report.
Across the front, someone had written:
ASK VICTORIA WHAT SHE DID AT MIDNIGHT.
Security footage showed Victoria entering the building thirty minutes earlier.
May you like
She left seven minutes later.
Emma walked beside her willingly.
