Chapter 9 — The Federal Lie

Chapter 9 — The Federal Lie

Marcus ordered Evelyn to release Emma.

She refused.

“Shoot me first.”

“That was always the plan.”

Noah moved slightly.

Marcus fired near his feet.

“Don’t.”

Daniel stood behind a steel pillar, partially hidden.

Calvin bled on the floor but remained conscious.

The female impostor pressed both hands over his wound.

Marcus descended the catwalk stairs.

“For fifteen years, Gideon Ashford financed people inside federal agencies,” he said. “Judges. Investigators. Regulators. I was recruited before I earned my badge.”

Evelyn tightened her hold on Emma.

“You arrested Raymond.”

“Raymond became unreliable.”

“You issued the warrants.”

“To find the archive before Noah did.”

Noah stared at him.

“You killed Thomas Reed.”

Marcus smiled.

“I was nineteen when Thomas died. Give me some credit for aging.”

“Then who?”

“Gideon has employed many talented people.”

He gestured toward the hidden staircase.

“The archive.”

Noah did not move.

Marcus aimed at Emma again.

“Now.”

Evelyn whispered to her daughter.

“When I say run, go behind the yellow machine.”

Emma’s body trembled.

“No matter what you hear, keep running.”

Marcus stepped closer.

Noah moved toward the stairs.

A groan came from the floor.

Calvin rolled, raised a concealed pistol and fired.

The bullet struck Marcus in the leg.

Evelyn pushed Emma toward the machinery.

Gunfire erupted.

Daniel tackled Marcus from the side.

Noah dragged Calvin behind cover.

The female impostor shielded Emma.

Marcus fired blindly and struck a chemical pipe.

Steam exploded across the room.

Evelyn heard Daniel shout.

Then silence.

When the steam cleared, Marcus lay unconscious beneath Daniel.

Calvin was alive.

Daniel had been shot in the abdomen.

Noah pressed fabric against the wound.

“Stay with me.”

Daniel looked toward Evelyn.

“Still think I betrayed you?”

She knelt beside him.

“I’m sorry.”

“Good. I plan to use that guilt for a raise.”

Paramedics arrived with federal agents from outside Marcus’s unit.

Marcus was arrested.

Daniel and Calvin were evacuated.

The hidden archive remained.

Evelyn, Noah, Victoria and Gideon entered the underground chamber hours later under supervision from an independent prosecutor.

The room contained shelves of paper files sealed against moisture.

No digital network.

No remote access.

Gideon looked genuinely shocked.

“This was supposed to have been destroyed.”

Victoria laughed without humor.

“Thomas built a second archive.”

Noah pulled a ledger from the shelf.

“He knew the company would erase the first.”

The files documented far more than chemical dumping.

Illegal campaign payments.

Union intimidation.

Witness disappearances.

False medical reports.

Land seizures.

Judicial bribes.

The names reached governors, senators, police commissioners and business leaders across the country.

The evidence could collapse Ashford Industries.

It could also destroy Bellhaven’s government.

Then Evelyn found a folder labeled with her mother’s name.

Margaret Ashford’s medical records showed years of exposure to a rare industrial compound.

The same compound produced at the Bellhaven plant.

A physician’s letter stated Margaret had been intentionally dosed over time.

The recipient of the letter was Gideon.

“You knew she was being poisoned,” Evelyn said.

Gideon stared at the page.

“I knew she was ill.”

“The doctor warned you.”

“I believed the diagnosis was politically motivated.”

“Her own physician?”

“He wanted money.”

Victoria took another file.

Inside was a payment from Gideon’s private account to the physician two weeks before Margaret’s death.

She handed it to Evelyn.

“He paid for silence.”

Gideon’s face hardened.

“You think that proves murder?”

“It proves you buried the warning.”

Noah opened a steel drawer at the rear of the archive.

Inside was a videotape.

The label read:

MARGARET ASHFORD — FINAL STATEMENT

They found an old monitor.

The image flickered.

Margaret appeared on-screen, thin and visibly ill.

Evelyn’s knees weakened at the sight of her mother.

Margaret looked directly into the camera.

“If my daughters ever see this, I failed to protect them.”

Victoria covered her mouth.

Margaret continued.

“Gideon did not poison me.”

The old man released a breath.

“But he knows who did.”

His relief vanished.

“The person responsible has been inside our family for years. Gideon protected him because exposing the truth would reveal that Victoria’s son was not Thomas Reed’s child.”

Victoria went still.

Nathan had believed Thomas was his father.

So had she.

Margaret looked down at something off-camera.

“Nathan’s father is the man who ordered the East Bellhaven dumping and who will kill again to protect what belongs to him.”

The tape skipped.

Then Margaret spoke the name.

“Raymond Vale.”

Victoria staggered backward.

Noah froze the frame.

Nathan had not been raised by his father’s relatives.

He had been raised by his biological father.

And Raymond had spent twenty-three years teaching his son to hate the wrong family.

Before the video could continue, the chamber lights failed.

A loud mechanical lock sealed the entrance.

Gas began hissing through the vents.

Over the emergency speaker, Raymond Vale’s voice filled the archive.

“You should have left the dead buried.”
