Chapter 8 — The Godfather

Chapter 8 — The Godfather
Evelyn ran into the corridor.
Daniel Mercer stood near the elevators holding Emma’s coat.
He was forty-six, calm under pressure and trusted with every part of Evelyn’s life.
He had sat beside her at Noah’s memorial.
He had carried Emma when the child was too young to understand why her father was not coming home.
“Where is Emma?” Evelyn demanded.
Daniel looked confused.
“With the federal agent.”
“What agent?”
“The woman Marcus sent.”
Marcus appeared behind Evelyn.
“I sent no one.”
They raced toward the pediatric waiting area.
Emma was gone.
The agent assigned to guard her lay unconscious inside a supply closet.
Security footage showed a woman wearing a federal jacket walking Emma through the hospital lobby.
Daniel watched the video.
“I didn’t know.”
“You told her where Emma was,” Evelyn said.
“I believed the woman was legitimate.”
“Noah named you.”
Daniel’s face went still.
“What?”
Evelyn played the final section of the recording.
He listened without interruption.
Then he sat down.
“Noah was wrong.”
“Was he?”
“I never betrayed you.”
“Someone inside Meridian leaked our schedules.”
“Thousands of employees have access to pieces of that information.”
“Only five know Emma’s security rotation.”
Daniel met her eyes.
“Then arrest all five.”
Marcus ordered his agents to detain Daniel.
As they moved closer, Daniel lifted his hands.
“Before you decide I’m the enemy, check the hospital camera at 3:11 a.m.”
A nurse pulled up the footage.
At 3:11, Daniel had entered the hospital parking garage.
Another man approached him.
The image was grainy, but the man’s face became visible when he passed beneath a light.
Noah Hart.
Alive.
Evelyn gripped the edge of the desk.
Noah handed Daniel a folder and disappeared into a stairwell.
“You saw him,” she whispered.
Daniel looked broken.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“He made me promise.”
“You promised my dead husband something while our daughter was missing?”
“He said telling you would put Emma in greater danger.”
Evelyn struck him.
The sound silenced the corridor.
Daniel did not defend himself.
“You do not get to decide what truth I can survive.”
“I know.”
“Where is Noah?”
“I don’t know.”
“What was in the folder?”
Daniel nodded toward his confiscated briefcase.
Marcus opened it.
Inside were photographs of Meridian executives meeting Raymond Vale.
Bank transfers linked company accounts to the surveillance of Evelyn and Emma.
At the center of the records was a name.
CALVIN SHAW.
Meridian’s head of internal security.
Calvin had personally designed the protection system around Evelyn’s home.
He knew every camera blind spot.
Every emergency code.
Every guard assigned to Emma.
Marcus issued an arrest order.
Calvin’s office was empty.
His company vehicle had left the city twenty minutes earlier.
A traffic camera captured Emma in the back seat.
The female impostor drove.
Calvin sat beside her.
They were heading east toward the Ashford Chemical site in Bellhaven.
The abandoned plant stood above the buried waste fields that began the entire scandal.
Evelyn insisted on joining the pursuit.
Daniel went with her under federal supervision.
“You knew Noah was alive before last night,” Evelyn said during the drive.
Daniel looked through the windshield.
“I suspected.”
“How long?”
“Three years.”
She turned toward him.
“Three years?”
“Anonymous evidence kept arriving. Documents only Noah could have found.”
“And you hid them.”
“I used them to remove compromised employees.”
“Calvin remained.”
“Because Calvin was feeding information to Noah.”
Evelyn stared.
“You just said Calvin kidnapped Emma.”
“I said he was feeding information to Noah. I don’t know what side he is on now.”
At the chemical plant, agents found Calvin’s vehicle near a loading bay.
The rear door stood open.
Emma’s shoe lay on the gravel.
Evelyn ran inside.
The plant smelled of rust, oil and wet concrete.
A light moved on an upper catwalk.
Then a man emerged.
Noah.
He looked thinner than Evelyn remembered. Gray threaded his beard. A scar crossed one side of his forehead.
But he was alive.
Evelyn could not move.
Five years of grief collided with the impossible sight of him.
“Where is Emma?” she asked.
Noah looked toward the shadows behind him.
“She’s safe.”
Emma ran from behind a support beam.
“Mommy!”
Evelyn dropped to her knees and held her.
Relief lasted only seconds.
Then she stood and struck Noah across the face.
He accepted the blow.
“You let us bury you.”
“I had no choice.”
“You had five years.”
“They would have killed you.”
“They nearly killed Emma anyway.”
Noah looked toward Daniel.
“You brought him.”
“You named him as the traitor.”
“I named him because I knew the tape would be found by the Vales.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You used me as bait.”
“I needed Nathan to believe Daniel controlled the leak.”
Evelyn stared between them.
“Who took Emma from the hospital?”
Calvin Shaw stepped from the shadows with the female impostor.
“We did,” he said.
Evelyn pulled Emma behind her.
Calvin lowered his weapon.
“We rescued her before Nathan’s people reached the hospital.”
“You could have told us.”
“No,” Noah said. “Because Marcus Bell has an informant inside his task force.”
Marcus, listening through Evelyn’s concealed microphone, ordered every agent to hold position.
Noah walked to an old control panel.
“I brought you here because the original Ashford archive is beneath this plant.”
“What archive?”
“Evidence of every payment, every death and every official Gideon owned.”
He entered a code.
The concrete floor opened, revealing a hidden staircase.
Before anyone could move, a shot rang out.
Calvin collapsed.
The female impostor screamed.
A second shot shattered the control panel.
From the upper catwalk, Special Agent Marcus Bell aimed his weapon at Noah.
“Step away from the stairs,” Marcus ordered.
Noah raised his hands.
Evelyn looked at the man she had trusted to investigate the Ashfords.
Marcus smiled.
“You were right about an informant inside my task force.”
May you like
Then he pointed the gun at Emma.
“It was me.”
