Chapter 12 - THE MEDICAL PROXY

The false transfer order used a vendor credential connected to Hawthorne Recovery.

Hospital security canceled it and placed an alert on my record.

The contractor assigned to transport me had received my address.

The secure apartment was no longer secure.

Agent Mercer moved me to a protected medical residence under a new patient name.

Dad learned the location only after signing an agreement not to appear without permission.

For once, he accepted a boundary before arguing.

Hawthorne’s director surrendered emails showing Victoria had requested a room “without outside communication until family stabilization.”

Richard was copied.

He replied:

Make sure the proxy survives any challenge from Lawson.

Maya became quiet when she read it.

“He knew I would object before you were injured.”

Richard’s attorney said the email concerned ordinary privacy during a mental-health crisis.

No crisis had existed.

They had created the paperwork before causing the conditions they hoped would justify it.

The private physician who certified my supposed instability was Dr. Evan Burke.

He had never examined me.

He relied on summaries from Victoria and Richard.

His summary included false claims that I heard voices, attempted to jump from a balcony, and forgot signing financial documents.

The medical board suspended his ability to perform capacity evaluations while investigating.

He agreed to cooperate.

Burke said Richard wanted a preliminary opinion, not a final diagnosis.

Victoria demanded stronger language.

“She said Elena’s father would interfere unless the medical record was decisive.”

“Did she mention the pregnancy?” Maya asked.

“She said preserving the child required separating the mother from outside influence.”

The words made me cold.

Richard had spoken often about our baby as the next Carrington heir.

He wanted a son.

We had chosen not to learn the sex.

Victoria called the child “the continuity generation.”

I had dismissed the phrase as family vanity.

Now it sounded like legal planning.

The documents recovered from the estate included an unborn-child trust.

It would receive Richard’s Carrington shares if I became permanently incapacitated or died.

Richard would serve as trustee.

Victoria would manage the assets if he were unavailable.

The trust itself was not unusual for a wealthy family.

The surrounding forged medical evidence made it dangerous.

Maya asked whether Richard had ever discussed life insurance.

He had increased policies on both of us after the pregnancy.

I had signed mine knowingly.

The amount was three million dollars.

Richard was beneficiary.

That fact did not prove intent.

It added motive to an already troubling structure.

The transport contractor identified the employee assigned to collect me.

His name was Aaron Pike.

He disappeared after the transfer was canceled.

Police found the van abandoned near the interstate.

Inside were blank medical restraints, a sedative kit, and a sealed envelope addressed to Hawthorne Recovery.

The envelope contained a certificate stating I lacked capacity.

My forged signature appeared beneath it.

The witness line carried Owen Shaw’s name.
