Chapter 23 - THE CONVOY ROUTE
The pursuit ended when the cloned vehicle struck a barrier placed beyond the freight district.
No officers fired.
Ross suffered a broken wrist.
Owen struck his head but remained conscious.
Inside the vehicle were weapons, signal jammers, federal uniforms, and tools designed to open evidence containers.
The decoy boxes contained inert drives.
Owen understood immediately that the master evidence had moved elsewhere.
He refused to speak.
Ross did not.
He confirmed Owen planned both the convoy theft and Dad’s murder.
His account required corroboration.
The rifle team’s messages supplied it.
One text read:
Director first. Convoy second. Clean exit before sunrise.
Payment records came from Meridian Risk Advisory.
Owen was charged with conspiracy, attempted murder, evidence theft, espionage-related offenses, bribery, and obstruction.
Ross faced overlapping charges.
The arrested transport supervisor cooperated.
He described years of leaked routes and inspection schedules.
Owen’s corruption extended beyond Carrington Meridian.
Several unrelated cases reopened.
The agency’s failure was institutional, not only personal.
Dad testified before an oversight committee.
He described Owen’s early warnings, his own dismissal of complaints, and the culture that treated senior loyalty as a security control.
He did not hide behind classification.
Where details remained protected, he acknowledged limits instead of using secrecy to avoid responsibility.
His mandatory retirement became final.
He left office without ceremony.
No public medal.
No dramatic farewell.
He carried one cardboard box from the agency.
Inside were family photographs, a work watch, and the Code Black terminal decommissioned as evidence.
The terminal did not come home.
The trial court ruled on the suppression motions.
Some estate evidence remained excluded.
The independently recovered master drive, Helen’s recorder, Northpoint devices, Pier Nine archive, bank records, and Richard’s cooperation were admissible.
The prosecution had enough.
Victoria refused every plea offer.
She claimed Richard built Alpha and used her as an executor.
Owen claimed the agency authorized covert industry monitoring and later criminalized it.
Ross claimed he followed Owen under threat.
Richard admitted his own acts and contradicted all three.
I completed the divorce before trial.
The court restored my inherited investment account through traced assets and insurer settlements. The marital home was sold under supervision because Alpha money had paid part of its renovation.
I did not fight to keep it.
The nursery Richard prepared belonged to a version of our family that had never been safe.
Grace and I moved into a modest house near Maya and Dr. Miles’s hospital.
Dad rented a small place fifteen minutes away.
He asked before visiting.
He never arrived with hidden terminals.
At seven months, Grace began laughing whenever he jingled ordinary car keys.
The sound that once accompanied Code Black became a game.
Then Dana delivered the trial witness list.
My name appeared after Richard’s.
Victoria would hear her brother describe the dinner, the medical plan, and Alpha under oath.
