Chapter 2: The Missing Footage

The words echoed through Adrian Cole's study long after the security guard had finished speaking.

"The cameras were manually disabled."

Adrian remained standing beside his desk.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the lights from the estate reflected across the swimming pool where only hours earlier his engagement party had nearly become a public scandal.

He looked toward the dark water.

Someone hadn't simply pushed Claire into the pool.

Someone had made sure no camera would record it.

That changed everything.

"Bring me the head of security."

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"Immediately."

"Yes, sir."

Five minutes later, Thomas Briggs entered the study.

He was fifty-two years old.

A former Marine.

For nearly a decade he had overseen security for the Cole estate.

Thomas rarely looked nervous.

Tonight, he did.

"You wanted to see me, sir?"

Adrian motioned toward the surveillance monitors.

"Explain."

Thomas swallowed.

"The camera system was disabled between 3:14 and 3:21 this afternoon."

"Why?"

"We're still investigating."

Adrian looked directly into his eyes.

"I didn't ask what you're investigating."

"I asked why."

Thomas hesitated.

"The shutdown required administrator access."

Silence.

"Meaning?"

"Someone with executive authorization disabled the cameras."

"Who has that authorization?"

Thomas quietly answered.

"You."

"I know."

"Who else?"

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

"Miss Pierce."

Savannah.

Adrian slowly sat down.

"When was the last time she accessed the system?"

Thomas opened his tablet.

His expression changed.

"Today."

"What time?"

"Three eleven."

Exactly three minutes before Claire was pushed into the water.

Across the estate...

Claire couldn't sleep.

Ellie lay peacefully beside her, hugging Mr. Moon beneath the blankets.

Claire watched her daughter breathe.

Every rise and fall of the little girl's chest reminded Claire why she endured everything.

Long hours.

Mean employers.

Loneliness.

She would survive anything...

As long as Ellie stayed safe.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Claire quietly opened the bedroom door.

Margaret stood outside carrying a small tray.

Tea.

Fresh bread.

Honey.

"You skipped dinner."

Claire smiled weakly.

"I wasn't hungry."

Margaret raised an eyebrow.

"That's a mother's answer."

Claire looked down.

"I wanted Ellie to eat more."

Margaret stepped inside.

"I've seen that before."

Claire accepted the tea.

"Thank you."

Margaret glanced toward the sleeping child.

"She has brave eyes."

Claire laughed softly.

"Too brave."

Margaret sat beside the tiny window.

"Do you know why Mr. Cole rarely hosts parties?"

Claire shook her head.

"I assumed he disliked crowds."

"He does now."

"What changed?"

Margaret stared into the darkness.

"His younger sister."

Claire listened quietly.

"She drowned."

Claire froze.

"What?"

"Twenty-three years ago."

"She was four."

Claire slowly looked toward Ellie.

Margaret continued.

"Mr. Cole was only nine."

"He tried to save her."

"But he couldn't."

Silence filled the room.

"Since then..."

Margaret whispered,

"He never ignores a frightened child."

Meanwhile...

Savannah paced inside the master suite.

She called the same mysterious number again.

This time...

The man answered immediately.

"Why are you calling?"

"You didn't tell me Adrian would investigate."

"I assumed he wouldn't."

"He checked the cameras."

A pause.

Then the man sighed.

"I warned you not to lose your temper."

"I didn't."

"You shoved the maid into a swimming pool in front of eighty witnesses."

Savannah clenched her jaw.

"She embarrassed me."

"No."

The man's voice became colder.

"You embarrassed yourself."

"What do I do now?"

Another long silence.

Finally...

"Find out what the little girl remembers."

The line disconnected.

The Next Morning

Ellie skipped down the mansion hallway holding Mr. Moon by one floppy ear.

Claire carried fresh towels behind her.

"Stay close."

"I am."

"No running."

"I'm walking fast."

Claire smiled.

Ellie always found tiny loopholes.

As they entered the main kitchen, Adrian was already there.

The billionaire stood at the coffee machine reading financial reports.

He looked up.

Then smiled.

"Good morning."

Claire looked surprised.

"Good morning, sir."

Ellie waved enthusiastically.

"Hi, Mr. Big House."

Adrian laughed.

"I suppose that's my official title now."

Ellie nodded seriously.

"It fits."

Claire covered her face in embarrassment.

"I'm so sorry."

Adrian shook his head.

"It's refreshing."

He noticed Ellie staring at the breakfast table.

Fresh fruit.

Pancakes.

Warm cinnamon rolls.

The little girl wasn't asking for anything.

She was simply looking.

Children who had known hunger often did that.

Adrian quietly slid a plate toward her.

"Would you like breakfast?"

Ellie immediately looked at Claire instead of the food.

Claire nodded gently.

"It's okay."

Only then did Ellie whisper,

"Thank you."

She took exactly one pancake.

Not three.

Not four.

Just one.

Adrian noticed.

"So polite."

Claire answered softly,

"She's learned not to take more than she needs."

The sentence stayed with Adrian.

An Unexpected Discovery

After breakfast, Adrian visited the security office.

Thomas had prepared a complete access log.

"There."

Thomas pointed.

"Administrator login."

"Three eleven."

"Authorized by Savannah Pierce."

Adrian frowned.

"Can passwords be stolen?"

"Yes."

"But..."

"But what?"

"The login also required fingerprint verification."

Adrian looked up slowly.

"So whoever disabled the cameras..."

"...used Savannah's fingerprint."

Thomas nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian stared silently at the screen.

There were only two possibilities.

Either Savannah had done it herself...

Or someone had used her authorization with her knowledge.

Neither answer was acceptable.

At the same moment...

Claire entered the mansion's laundry room.

She immediately noticed something strange.

The room had already been cleaned.

Spotlessly.

Every basket perfectly arranged.

Every shelf dusted.

That wasn't unusual.

What was unusual...

Was the open locker.

Her locker.

She hurried over.

Nothing appeared missing.

Except...

One photograph.

The only photograph she carried of Ben.

Her late husband.

Claire searched everywhere.

Nothing.

Her breathing quickened.

Someone had been inside.

Later that afternoon...

Ellie sat beneath an old oak tree drawing with crayons.

Adrian happened to pass by on his way to a meeting.

"What are you making?"

Ellie proudly held up the picture.

It showed four people.

One woman.

One little girl.

One man with wings.

And another tall man wearing a blue suit.

Adrian smiled.

"Who's this?"

She pointed.

"Mommy."

"And this?"

"Daddy."

He noticed the wings.

"I see."

Then she pointed toward the man in blue.

"That's you."

Adrian looked surprised.

"Really?"

She nodded.

"You helped Mommy yesterday."

"I didn't do very much."

"You looked."

"What do you mean?"

Ellie colored another flower.

"Most grown-ups looked away."

"You looked."

Adrian suddenly found himself unable to answer.

That Evening

Thomas Briggs rushed into Adrian's office.

His face had gone pale.

"We found something."

"What?"

"The backup server."

"I thought there wasn't one."

"There wasn't."

"But one camera records separately."

Adrian stood.

"Which one?"

"The gardener's greenhouse."

"What does that have to do with the pool?"

Thomas turned the monitor.

The greenhouse camera didn't face the swimming pool.

It faced the service path leading toward it.

At exactly 3:09...

Savannah appeared.

She wasn't alone.

She met a man wearing a gray baseball cap.

His face remained hidden.

The two exchanged something.

A small black device.

Three minutes later...

The pool cameras went offline.

Adrian whispered,

"Zoom in."

Thomas enlarged the image.

The man turned slightly.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Enough to reveal...

A distinctive tattoo behind his left ear.

A black snake.

Thomas stared.

"I've never seen him before."

Adrian slowly leaned closer.

Then something else caught his attention.

The man handed Savannah an envelope.

She opened it immediately.

Inside...

Was a photograph.

Thomas zoomed further.

The image was blurry.

But one detail was unmistakable.

It showed Claire.

Holding baby Ellie in a hospital parking lot.

Adrian's expression hardened.

Someone had been watching Claire...

May you like

Long before she ever came to work at the Cole estate.
