Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden in Ben's Notebook

The library fell into complete silence.
Claire stared at Adrian as though the world had suddenly tilted beneath her feet.
"What do you mean... Connecticut?"
Thomas Briggs' voice still echoed through the speakerphone.
"The recovered metadata places the photograph in Hartford, Connecticut. The timestamp is authentic."
Claire slowly shook her head.
"That's impossible."
"My daughter was born in Tulsa."
"I never left Oklahoma while I was pregnant."
Adrian believed she was telling the truth.
He had spent years negotiating billion-dollar mergers.
He knew what deception looked like.
Claire wasn't lying.
She was frightened.
Adrian ended the call.
"I think someone wants us to believe something that isn't true."
Claire crossed her arms tightly.
"Who would do something like that?"
"I don't know."
"But someone disabled my security cameras."
"Someone stole your family photograph."
"And someone has been following you long before you came here."
He paused.
"I don't believe those are coincidences."
Claire looked toward Ellie, who was quietly coloring on the library floor.
"My daughter..."
"Is she in danger?"
Adrian answered honestly.
"I don't know."
"But until I have answers..."
"...you're both staying under my protection."
Claire immediately objected.
"Mr. Cole, I can't ask that of you."
"You didn't."
"I'm offering."
A Restless Night
That evening, rain rolled across the Atlantic coast.
The old mansion creaked beneath the wind.
Claire couldn't sleep.
She quietly opened the small wooden chest beneath her bed.
Inside were the few possessions she had carried through every move since Ben's death.
A silver wedding ring on a chain.
Ellie's first baby shoes.
A faded hospital bracelet.
And one worn blue notebook.
Ben's notebook.
She hadn't opened it in over a year.
Her fingers trembled as she lifted the cover.
Inside were pages filled with furniture sketches.
Dining tables.
Rocking chairs.
Bookshelves.
Every drawing carried tiny handwritten notes.
Measurements.
Ideas.
Dreams.
Claire smiled through tears.
"This was your future..."
She whispered to the empty room.
"And ours."
As she turned another page...
Something unexpected slipped onto the blanket.
A folded envelope.
Her breath caught.
She had never seen it before.
The Letter
Across the front, Ben's familiar handwriting read:
For Claire.
Only if something happens to me.
Claire's hands shook so badly she could barely unfold it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Claire,
If you're reading this, then I wasn't able to tell you everything.
There are people who may someday come looking for something they believe I have.
They will ask questions.
They may even pretend to be your friends.
Whatever happens...
Never let anyone take Ellie's yellow bunny.
It isn't just a toy.
Trust no one until you find the compass.
If Adrian Cole is ever part of your life...
Tell him I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise.
Love always,
Ben.
Claire stopped breathing.
Adrian Cole?
She had never met Adrian before arriving at the estate.
Neither had Ben.
Or so she believed.
An Unexpected Visitor
At exactly 2:17 a.m., someone knocked gently on Claire's bedroom door.
She quickly hid the letter.
"Who is it?"
"It's Margaret."
Claire opened the door.
Margaret immediately noticed her pale face.
"What's wrong?"
Claire silently handed her the letter.
Margaret read every word.
When she reached Adrian's name...
She looked up sharply.
"Where did this come from?"
"It was hidden inside Ben's notebook."
Margaret sat down slowly.
"Oh, my God..."
"You recognize something?"
Margaret nodded.
"I recognize the name."
Twenty-Eight Years Earlier
Margaret stared into the rain outside the window.
"When Adrian was six..."
"...his father funded a woodworking apprenticeship program."
Claire listened carefully.
"One of the students was a teenage boy named Benjamin Whitaker."
Claire frowned.
"Ben?"
"I don't know."
"It was many years ago."
"But I remember Adrian following that older boy everywhere."
"They built birdhouses together."
"They carved little wooden boats."
"They became friends."
Claire whispered,
"Ben never mentioned any of this."
Margaret looked at the letter again.
"Maybe because he wasn't supposed to."
Adrian Can't Sleep
Downstairs...
Adrian sat alone in his office.
The newspaper clipping lay beside the greenhouse security photo.
Neither made sense.
His father had rarely spoken about the past.
There were entire years Adrian knew almost nothing about.
A soft knock interrupted him.
Richard, his longtime estate manager, stepped inside.
"Couldn't sleep either?"
Adrian smiled faintly.
"No."
Richard placed another dusty storage box on the desk.
"I found this in the attic."
"What is it?"
"Your father's personal files."
Inside were dozens of old journals.
Business papers.
Photographs.
Then...
A leather-bound appointment book.
Adrian flipped through it.
Most entries were ordinary.
Meetings.
Travel.
Charity events.
Then one date caught his eye.
June 14
Meet Ben.
Must protect the child before Pierce finds out.
Adrian read the sentence three times.
Protect the child.
Pierce.
Savannah's family name.
His heartbeat quickened.
Savannah Begins to Panic
Across town...
Savannah poured herself another glass of wine.
Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.
She opened the envelope the tattooed man had given her.
Inside was only one photograph.
It showed a smiling young man standing beside a woodworking shop.
Written on the back were four words.
He should have listened.
Savannah recognized the man immediately.
Ben Whitaker.
Claire's late husband.
She grabbed her phone.
"You lied to me."
The tattooed man answered calmly.
"What now?"
"You never told me Ben was connected to Adrian's family."
"It wasn't relevant."
"It is now."
"No."
"It was twenty-five years ago."
Savannah whispered,
"What exactly did Ben know?"
The man smiled.
"Enough to die."
The line disconnected.
Savannah's glass slipped from her hand.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Ellie Has a Dream
Near dawn...
Ellie suddenly sat upright in bed.
"Mommy!"
Claire rushed to her.
"What is it?"
"I had the dream again."
"What dream?"
"The one with Daddy."
Claire gently held her.
"What happened?"
Ellie looked frightened.
"Daddy kept saying..."
"...'Don't lose Mr. Moon.'"
Claire's eyes widened.
"The bunny?"
Ellie nodded.
"He said..."
"...'The key is inside.'"
Claire froze.
Inside?
She slowly reached toward the faded yellow stuffed bunny.
It looked exactly as it always had.
Old.
Worn.
One button eye slightly loose.
Nothing unusual.
Until she gently squeezed its stomach.
Something hard was hidden inside the stuffing.
The Hidden Object
Claire carefully examined the bunny.
There was a tiny seam along the back.
Almost invisible.
Someone had stitched it closed by hand.
Years ago.
She found a small pair of sewing scissors.
With trembling hands...
She opened the seam.
Soft cotton stuffing spilled onto the bed.
Then...
A small brass key fell into her palm.
Attached to it...
Was a tiny metal tag.
Engraved with one word.
COLE
Claire stared at it in disbelief.
At that exact moment...
A loud crash echoed from downstairs.
Glass shattered.
An alarm began screaming through the mansion.
Red emergency lights flashed across the hallway.
Ellie clutched Claire's arm.
"Mommy..."
Footsteps thundered through the house.
Someone shouted,
"Security breach!"
Then another voice...
"Lock every exit!"
Claire looked down at the brass key.
Someone had hidden it inside Ellie's toy years ago.
And somehow...
Someone else had just broken into the Cole estate.
May you like
Looking for it.
