Chapter 3: The Photograph That Shouldn't Exist

Adrian Cole stared at the frozen security footage without blinking.

The grainy greenhouse camera showed Savannah accepting a thick envelope from the unidentified man with the black snake tattoo behind his ear.

When she opened it, a single photograph slipped halfway out.

The image quality was poor.

The distance was too great to identify faces clearly.

But Adrian knew what he had seen.

Claire.

Holding a newborn baby.

Standing beside an old blue sedan.

Thomas Briggs zoomed in again.

"It almost looks like a hospital parking lot."

Adrian nodded slowly.

"It is."

Thomas looked surprised.

"You recognize it?"

"No."

"But Claire came to us from Oklahoma."

He leaned closer to the monitor.

"Why would anyone photograph a young widow holding her newborn?"

Neither man answered.

Because neither could think of a reason that wasn't deeply disturbing.

Across the Estate

Claire spent the afternoon polishing the enormous ballroom windows.

Sunlight poured through the glass, making every crystal chandelier sparkle.

Normally, she enjoyed quiet work.

It gave her time to think.

Today, she couldn't stop replaying yesterday.

The shove.

The cold water.

Ellie's tiny voice.

You hurt my mommy on purpose.

Claire closed her eyes for a moment.

She had spent three years teaching Ellie to be kind.

To forgive.

To never lie.

She had never imagined those lessons would place her daughter in danger.

Margaret entered carrying a basket of fresh linens.

"You've polished the same window three times."

Claire sighed.

"I know."

"You're worried."

Claire lowered the cloth.

"I keep asking myself one question."

Margaret waited.

"What if Ellie hadn't spoken?"

Margaret looked toward the gardens.

"Then nothing would have changed."

"And maybe that would have been safer."

Margaret slowly shook her head.

"No."

"The truth always costs something."

She smiled sadly.

"But lies usually cost more."

Adrian Begins Asking Questions

Late that afternoon, Adrian requested Claire meet him in the library.

She hesitated outside the massive oak doors.

Had she made a mistake?

Was she being dismissed?

She knocked softly.

"Come in."

The library was warm and quiet.

Shelves stretched to the ceiling.

Old leather-bound books filled every wall.

Adrian stood beside the fireplace.

He gestured toward a chair.

"Please."

Claire remained standing.

"I'd rather stand, sir."

He noticed the nervousness immediately.

"I'm not firing you."

Relief flashed across her face before she could hide it.

"I only want to ask a few questions."

Claire nodded.

"What kind of questions?"

He studied her carefully.

"How long have you been in New York?"

"Almost two years."

"Before that?"

"Tulsa."

"And before Tulsa?"

"I've lived there my entire life."

Adrian folded his hands.

"Do you know anyone named Savannah Pierce?"

Claire frowned.

"No."

"Before taking this job?"

"No."

"Anyone connected to her family?"

"No."

He watched every expression.

No hesitation.

No deception.

She truly didn't understand why he was asking.

Then he surprised her.

"Has anyone ever followed you?"

Claire blinked.

"What?"

"Any strangers?"

"Cars?"

"People asking unusual questions?"

She thought for several moments.

Then...

"There was one man."

Adrian leaned forward.

"When?"

"Outside the hospital."

"What happened?"

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"I thought he was just another parent."

"But?"

"He kept staring at Ellie."

A Memory Returns

Claire's voice became quieter.

"It was winter."

"Ellie had an ear infection."

"We were leaving the pediatric clinic."

"There was a man standing beside a black SUV."

"He smiled."

"What did he say?"

Claire searched her memory.

"He asked..."

"...'Is that your only child?'"

Adrian's expression changed.

"What did you answer?"

"I said yes."

"Then he asked if her father was still alive."

Silence.

"What did you do?"

"I walked away."

She looked confused.

"I never thought about it again."

Adrian slowly nodded.

"But now you are."

Claire felt a chill run through her body.

The Missing Photograph

Adrian changed the subject.

"Margaret told me someone entered your room."

Claire looked surprised.

"She told you?"

"I asked."

Claire hesitated.

"They only took one thing."

"What?"

"A photograph."

"Of my husband."

Adrian frowned.

"Nothing else?"

"No money."

"No jewelry."

"No documents."

"Only the picture."

He walked toward the window.

"Why would someone steal that?"

Claire whispered,

"I don't know."

Savannah's Concern

At the same time...

Savannah sat in her luxury SUV outside the estate.

She wasn't driving.

She was waiting.

Exactly at six o'clock...

The passenger door opened.

The same man from the greenhouse climbed inside.

His baseball cap hid most of his face.

Only the snake tattoo remained visible.

"You've lost control."

Savannah folded her arms.

"You promised this would be easy."

"It was."

"Until you pushed the maid into a pool."

"I lost my temper."

He laughed.

"Clearly."

Savannah looked toward the mansion.

"Adrian's asking questions."

"He'll stop."

"No."

"You don't know him."

The man became serious.

"What does he suspect?"

"I don't know."

"But he's protecting the maid."

The man's smile disappeared.

"That's unfortunate."

The Order

He reached into his jacket.

Then handed Savannah another envelope.

She didn't open it.

"What is this?"

"Instructions."

"I don't want instructions."

"You don't have a choice."

She stared at him.

"What happens if I refuse?"

The man's voice remained calm.

"Then everyone learns why Adrian's father really died."

Savannah's face turned pale.

"You said those files were destroyed."

"I lied."

Ellie's New Friend

Back inside the estate...

Ellie wandered into the mansion's enormous library while Claire finished cleaning nearby.

She found Adrian sitting on the floor.

Actually sitting on the floor.

Surrounded by old books.

She giggled.

"You don't know how chairs work?"

Adrian looked up and laughed.

"I was looking for something."

She walked closer.

"What?"

"A very old story."

"Did you find it?"

"Not yet."

Ellie sat beside him.

"My daddy used to tell stories."

"What kind?"

"The happy ones."

She looked at one dusty book.

"Can I help?"

Adrian smiled.

"I'd like that."

For nearly twenty minutes...

A billionaire and a three-year-old searched books together.

Neither noticed Margaret watching from the hallway.

She quietly smiled to herself.

It had been years...

Since she'd seen Adrian genuinely laugh.

An Old Newspaper

As Adrian lifted another heavy volume from the lowest shelf...

Something slipped free.

A folded newspaper clipping.

Yellow with age.

He unfolded it carefully.

The headline read:

LOCAL CARPENTER DIES SAVING CHILD FROM HOUSE FIRE

The article was almost twenty-five years old.

A small photograph accompanied it.

Adrian stared.

His breathing slowed.

The carpenter...

Looked exactly like Claire's late husband.

Impossible.

He checked the name.

Benjamin Whitaker Sr.

Not Claire's husband.

His father.

The resemblance was extraordinary.

Ellie pointed at the picture.

"He looks like Grandpa."

Claire entered the room just in time to hear that sentence.

"What did you say?"

Ellie smiled.

"The man in the newspaper."

"He looks like Daddy."

Claire stepped closer.

The color drained from her face.

Because she had never met Ben's father.

He had died before Ben was born.

Yet...

The photograph looked exactly like the family portrait Ben had kept in his old notebook.

Thomas Makes Another Discovery

The office phone rang.

Thomas Briggs sounded breathless.

"Mr. Cole."

"What is it?"

"We identified the hospital."

Adrian stood immediately.

"The photograph."

"Yes."

"It wasn't taken in Oklahoma."

"What?"

"It was taken..."

Thomas paused.

"...in Connecticut."

Adrian frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Claire said Ellie was born in Tulsa."

"I know."

Thomas swallowed.

"But the timestamp on the recovered image metadata..."

"...places Claire and baby Ellie in Connecticut..."

"...three months before Ellie was supposedly born."

Silence filled the library.

Claire looked completely confused.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian slowly lowered the newspaper.

He looked into Claire's frightened eyes.

For the first time...

He wondered if she was hiding something...

Or if someone had rewritten her past without her ever knowing.

Outside the library windows...

A black SUV sat beyond the estate gates.

Inside...

The man with the snake tattoo watched through binoculars.

He smiled.

"He's getting closer."

Then he started the engine.

"And that means..."

May you like

"...it's time for Phase Two."
