Chapter 6: The Man Adrian Forgot

The underground archive became so quiet that even the slow dripping of water from the ancient stone ceiling sounded deafening.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The gray-haired man stepped forward from the darkness with the confidence of someone who had waited years for this exact moment.

The polished floor reflected the silver snake ring on his right hand.

His smile never reached his eyes.

Ellie buried her face against Claire's shoulder, clutching Mr. Moon so tightly that her little knuckles turned white.

Claire instinctively stepped backward.

"Stay behind me."

The stranger chuckled.

"A mother's first instinct."

"Benjamin always admired that about you."

Claire froze.

"You knew my husband?"

"Knew him?"

The man laughed softly.

"We worked together for years."

Adrian took one deliberate step forward.

"Who are you?"

The stranger removed a pair of black leather gloves with almost theatrical calm.

"My name..."

He paused.

"...is Victor Ashford."

Thomas Briggs frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Victor smiled.

"Most people haven't."

A Face from the Past

Adrian couldn't stop staring.

There was something strangely familiar about Victor's face.

Not enough to recognize him...

But enough to feel unsettled.

"Have we met before?"

Victor tilted his head.

"Oh, Adrian."

"We were practically family."

Claire looked at Adrian in confusion.

"You know him?"

Adrian slowly shook his head.

"I don't think so."

Victor sighed.

"That's the tragedy."

"You should."

Margaret suddenly gasped.

Her trembling hand flew to her mouth.

"Oh..."

Everyone looked at her.

She whispered,

"I remember you."

Victor smiled politely.

"I was wondering how long it would take."

Margaret's face had gone completely pale.

"You used to visit William Cole."

"Every Christmas."

"You were his business partner."

Thomas turned sharply.

"Business partner?"

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Thirty years ago."

William Cole's Fourth Partner

Victor walked toward the old cedar chest.

He gently brushed the dust from its lid.

"William Cole."

"Benjamin Whitaker."

He smiled.

"But there was someone else."

He tapped the wood.

"Me."

Adrian frowned.

"My father never mentioned you."

Victor looked almost amused.

"Your father erased me."

Thomas crossed his arms.

"Why?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Because I betrayed him."

Silence filled the underground chamber.

The Forgotten Company

Victor slowly opened one of the dusty filing cabinets.

Inside rested dozens of leather folders.

He removed the oldest one.

The front cover read:

Cole Artisan Workshop

Founded 1992

Partners:

William Cole

Victor Ashford

Benjamin Whitaker

Claire blinked.

"Ben was a partner?"

Victor nodded.

"The youngest one."

"He was brilliant."

"He designed furniture no one else imagined."

"He could look at a block of wood..."

"...and already see the finished masterpiece."

Claire smiled sadly.

"That sounds like him."

Victor's smile faded.

"Until William discovered what I was doing."

The Theft

Victor placed another folder onto the table.

Inside were financial records.

Canceled checks.

Transfer receipts.

Thomas skimmed the pages.

"Millions of dollars."

Victor nodded.

"I stole them."

Claire looked horrified.

"You admitted it?"

Victor shrugged.

"Ancient history."

Adrian stared.

"My father threw you out."

"He did."

"And Benjamin testified against me."

Claire whispered,

"So that's why..."

Victor finished her sentence.

"...I hated him."

The Accident Wasn't an Accident

Adrian looked directly into Victor's eyes.

"My helicopter crash."

Victor smiled.

"Now we're asking interesting questions."

Claire held her breath.

"You know about it."

"I arranged it."

Thomas instinctively stepped toward Victor.

"You tried to kill him?"

Victor raised one finger.

"No."

"I only needed him to forget."

Adrian's pulse quickened.

"You caused my memory loss."

Victor nodded.

"The explosion damaged your short-term memory."

"You forgot six months."

"You forgot Benjamin."

"You forgot everything William discovered."

Claire stared at Adrian.

"You really don't remember my husband?"

Adrian looked devastated.

"I wish I did."

Ellie's Voice

While the adults spoke...

Ellie slowly peeked around Claire's shoulder.

She looked at Victor with innocent curiosity.

Then she quietly asked,

"Why are you lying?"

Every adult stopped talking.

Victor slowly looked down at her.

"I'm sorry?"

"You said Daddy hated you."

Ellie hugged Mr. Moon.

"He didn't."

Victor laughed.

"And how would you know that?"

Ellie answered with complete certainty.

"Because Daddy prayed for you."

Silence.

Victor's smile faltered.

"He... what?"

Claire looked down at her daughter.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?"

Ellie frowned as she tried to remember.

"I woke up one night."

"Daddy thought I was sleeping."

"He was talking to God."

"What did he say?"

Ellie looked toward Victor.

"He said..."

"'Please help Victor find his way home.'"

Victor's face changed.

Just for an instant.

His confidence cracked.

Ben's Last Visit

Claire suddenly remembered something.

"There was one night."

"About a month before Ben died."

"He came home very late."

"He looked exhausted."

"He said someone from his past needed help."

Victor slowly lowered his eyes.

"He came to see me."

Claire stared.

"You?"

Victor nodded.

"He offered me a second chance."

Thomas looked shocked.

"After everything?"

Victor gave a bitter laugh.

"That's who Benjamin was."

"He forgave people far too easily."

The Hidden Recording

Adrian noticed another object inside the cedar chest.

A small digital recorder.

Covered in dust.

Thomas picked it up carefully.

"It still has power."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"No."

Thomas pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A familiar voice.

Benjamin Whitaker.

Claire covered her mouth.

Ben's voice sounded alive again.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then Victor failed."

Victor closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"Claire..."

"I'm sorry."

"If anything happens to me..."

"...don't hate Victor forever."

Claire stared at the recorder.

Ben had known.

He had expected this.

Then another voice interrupted the recording.

William Cole.

Adrian's father.

"Ben..."

"They're coming."

"We have to leave."

Ben answered calmly.

"One minute."

Then his voice became serious.

"Adrian..."

"If you're listening someday..."

"...remember one thing."

The room became perfectly still.

"The danger was never Victor."

Everyone looked toward the gray-haired man.

Victor looked just as confused as everyone else.

The recording continued.

"Victor made mistakes."

"But he isn't the man we're hiding from."

Claire whispered,

"Then who?"

As if answering her question...

The recorder captured another sound.

A door opening violently.

Someone shouting.

Then...

A single gunshot.

The recording ended.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Another Betrayal

Suddenly...

Thomas's radio crackled.

"Sir!"

A panicked security guard shouted through the speaker.

"We have multiple vehicles approaching the main gate!"

"How many?"

"At least eight black SUVs!"

Thomas looked toward Adrian.

"They're coming."

Victor slowly whispered,

"No..."

Claire frowned.

"You know them?"

Victor's expression filled with genuine fear.

"They found us."

"Who?"

Victor looked directly at Adrian.

"The people who murdered your father."

Everyone froze.

Adrian's voice was barely audible.

"My father died of a heart attack."

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

"He was poisoned."

At that exact moment...

The mansion's power suddenly went out.

The underground archive plunged into complete darkness.

Ellie screamed.

Claire held her tightly.

Somewhere in the darkness...

A heavy steel door slammed shut.

Then came a voice over the estate's emergency speaker system.

Cold.

Calm.

And unmistakably dangerous.

May you like

"Nobody leaves the mansion alive."
