Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastThe sight of the financial logs on the big screen sent the ballroom into total chaos. Shareholders began shouting demands for Arthur Sterlingās immediate resignation, while journalists scrambled to go live with the story of the century. Within minutes, federal agents in dark suits entered the ballroom, presenting a formal warrant for Arthur Sterlingās arrest on charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.

As the authorities led a silent, defeated Arthur Sterling away in handcuffs, Victoria rushed after him, sobbing frantically. She paused at the exit, casting a look of pure hatred back at Charlotte.
āThis isnāt over, Charlotte!ā Victoria screamed over the noise of the press. āYou think youāve won? You donāt know half of what happened to your mother! You have no idea who was really pulling the strings!ā
The words chilled Charlotte to the bone.
Later that evening, after the press had cleared out and the hotel was placed under temporary lockdown, Charlotte sat in her late motherās private office on the top floor. The room had remained locked since Eleanor Valeās death, preserved exactly as she had left it.
Julian walked in, carrying two cups of tea. He placed one on the oak desk in front of her. āThe board has officially recognized your position as CEO and Chairwoman. Arthurās supporters on the board have all surrendered their voting rights in exchange for non-prosecution agreements regarding minor infractions.ā
āIt was too easy, Julian,ā Charlotte murmured, staring at a framed photograph of her mother on the desk. āVictoriaās words at the ballroom... she wasnāt lying. Arthur was greedy, but he wasnāt smart enough to orchestrate the entire plot on his own. Someone else was advising him.ā
Julian frowned. āWho do you suspect?ā
Charlotte stood up and walked over to the large bookshelf lining the wall. She reached for a specific leather-bound bookāher motherās personal journalāand pulled it. The bookshelf slid open with a soft mechanical click, revealing a small, hidden wall safe behind it.
āMy mother always kept a second set of records,ā Charlotte said, entering a passkey into the safe. āShe told me that if anything ever happened to her, I should only trust the red notebook inside this safe.ā
The safe door clicked open. Charlotte reached inside, but her hand froze.

The safe was completely empty, except for a single black envelope containing a handwritten note:
āYou were too late, Charlotte. The real prize was never the hotel.ā
