Chapter 10
An hour later, the heavy front door clicked shut one final time. Claire walked down the driveway toward a waiting taxi, dragging a single suitcase behind her. The white lace wedding dress had been unpinned and packed away at the bottom of the bag, a discarded relic of a future that would never happen. Julian watched from the front window, standing in the dark living room, until the taxi's taillights disappeared around the corner of the suburban street.
He exhaled a breath he felt like he’d been holding since midday.
"Julian?"
He turned around to see Lily standing at the top of the stairs, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. She was wearing her favorite blue pajamas, the ones with little white stars printed all over them. Her blonde hair was sleep-mussed, sticking up on one side.
"Hey, kiddo," Julian said softly, walking over to the foot of the staircase and looking up at her. "What are you doing awake?"
"I heard voices," Lily mumbled, walking down the steps one by one, her bare feet making soft padding sounds on the wood. She stopped on the third step from the bottom, looking down at Julian with a solemn, knowing expression that was far too wise for a nine-year-old. "Is she gone?"
Julian reached up, resting a hand on her small shoulder as she reached the bottom step. "Yeah, Lily. She's gone."
"Are we going to be okay?" Lily asked, her lower lip trembling slightly as the memories of the day’s chaos flickered in her eyes.

"We're going to be more than okay," Julian said, offering a genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in hours. He knelt down so he was eye-level with her. "It's just the two of us now. And we're going to figure everything out. Together."
Lily threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. Julian held her tightly, feeling the small, steady beat of her heart against his chest. In that embrace, the hollow ache in his ribs began to fill with something real and enduring. The wedding was canceled, the illusion was shattered, but the family they had built together remained intact.
