Chapter 2

The silence in the grand hall was absolute, save for the faint, echoing shuffle of Claire’s heels on the polished marble as she stopped dead in her tracks. Her face, a picture of untroubled joy just seconds before, froze. The smile didn't vanish all at once; it cracked slowly, the edges of her lips trembling as her eyes darted between the guests, the altar, and the small piece of folded paper clutched in Julian's trembling hand.

Julian didn't look at her. He couldn't. His gaze remained locked on the ink, the uneven, hurried scrawl that had upended his entire life in the span of a single breath. Beside him, Lily muffled a sob, burying her face in the thick fabric of Julian's sleeve. Julian reached down mechanically, his fingers finding her small, cold hand and squeezing it with a desperation that bordered on panic.

"Julian?" Claire's voice finally cut through the heavy air, thin and trembling, lacking any of its usual melodic confidence. "What is this? Is this a joke? People are watching."

A murmur rippled through the pews. Heads craned, necks stretched, and hushed whispers buzzed like angry hornets in a room that had been filled with wedding march music barely a minute ago. Julian raised his head, his jaw set hard, though his eyes betrayed the raw terror eating away at his insides.

"It's no joke, Claire," Julian said, his voice remarkably steady despite the storm inside his chest. He turned his body slightly, shielding Lily from the sea of staring faces. "And it stops right here."

Claire took one involuntary step forward, her white lace veil swaying with the movement. The expensive fabric pooled around her like sea foam, completely at odds with the stark, freezing horror gripping the room. "You can't do this. Not now. Not in front of everyone."

"I have to," Julian whispered, the words heavy and final.

He didn't offer explanations to the crowd. He didn't turn to face his bewildered parents in the front row, whose expressions had shifted from confusion to outright alarm. Instead, Julian gently pulled Lily around, his arm shielding her shoulder, and began the long, agonizing walk away from the altar, leaving the white rose to wither in the empty silence of the abandoned ceremony.
