Chapter 13

The afternoon sun was warm as Julian and Lily walked through the double doors of the county records office, stepping into a room filled with tall wooden shelves and the comforting, dusty smell of old paper.

A middle-aged clerk behind the high counter looked up over her reading glasses, offering a kind, knowing smile. "Can I help you folks today?"

"Yes," Julian said, stepping up to the counter and resting his hand gently on Lily's shoulder. "We're here to file for a permanent guardianship and name change. We'd like to make it official."

The clerk nodded, reaching under the counter to pull out a thick stack of forms and a pristine pen. "You've come to the right place. Let's get started on the paperwork."

As Julian filled out the forms, line by line, writing his name next to Lily's in neat, steady cursive, he felt a profound sense of peace settle over him. Every box checked was a step toward a future built on honesty, stability, and unconditional love. There were no hidden accounts, no forged documents, no secrets waiting to tear their world apart in the middle of a grand ceremony.

Lily leaned against his arm, watching him write with intense focus. "Does this mean I get to pick my own room color now?" she whispered conspiratorially.

Julian stopped writing, looking down at her with a raised eyebrow. "What's wrong with your room?"

"It's too pink," Lily declared matter-of-factly. "I want it blue. Like the ocean."

"Blue it is," Julian agreed, signing the bottom line of the final document and sliding the stack back across the counter. The clerk stamped the top page with a heavy, satisfying thud that echoed through the quiet office.

They walked out of the county building hand in hand, stepping onto the sidewalk under a vast, cloudless American sky. The past month felt like a lifetime ago, a distant storm that had cleared the air and left the world brighter, sharper, and entirely real.
