Chapter 6

Claire pressed her back against the doorframe, her fingers digging into the white lace of her dress as if holding onto armor that was rapidly dissolving. The haughty defense mechanism she usually wore like a shield was cracking, revealing the panicked stranger beneath.
"You don't understand the pressure I was under," Claire muttered, her voice dropping to a desperate plea. She reached out, her manicured fingers brushing against Julian's forearm, but he pulled back immediately as if her touch burned. "My debts from before—before we met—they were catching up to me. The collection agencies, they were threatening to garnish my wages, to take the house. I had to fix it, Julian. I used the fund as a bridge loan. I was going to pay it back, every last cent, once the wedding gifts cleared."
"By stealing from people who trusted you?" Julian shook his head, a humorless, dry chuckle escaping his lips. "You didn't just break a contract today, Claire. You lied to my face every single day for three years. You looked at Lily, you let her call you aunt, while you were planning to skip town the moment the ink dried on our marriage license."
"That's not true!" Claire snapped, a flash of her old defiance returning before she forced it down, realizing it was useless. Tears welled in her eyes, real and frustrated. "I love Lily. And I love you, in my own way. But I couldn't survive the life we were building here. It wasn't enough. I needed out."
"Then you should have just walked away," Julian said quietly, turning his back to her and looking out the dark window into the backyard. "You didn't have to drag a nine-year-old child into the middle of a public humiliation. You didn't have to use her as a pawn in your games."
"I didn't give her that note, Julian," Claire said sharply.
Julian turned back around, narrowing his eyes. "What?"
"I didn't write the note," Claire insisted, stepping into the kitchen proper, her hands gesturing frantically. "I didn't even know someone knew about the accounts until you read those words at the altar. I thought... I thought you found out on your own. But someone else dropped that bomb on purpose."
Julian stared at her, weighing the truth in her words. Claire was a liar, yes, but right now, she looked genuinely terrified. If she hadn't exposed herself at the climax of the ceremony, then someone else had pulled the trigger.

"Who?" Julian asked.
Before Claire could answer, a sharp, urgent knock rattled the front door.
