Chapter 14 - Daniel's ConfessionDaniel Mercer did not run.
He walked slowly downstairs and raised both hands.
“I know how this looks.”
Caleb remained between him and Olivia.
“Then start explaining.”
Daniel nodded.
“I deserve that.”
Olivia stared at him.
“You knew my sister.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she was afraid.”
“Yes.”
“You disappeared.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at her.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”
Olivia's anger turned into confusion.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel sat down.
“Your sister discovered something.”
“What?”
“A financial network.”
Daniel explained that the company where Olivia's sister had worked was being used to move money through shell organizations.
Millions of dollars were being transferred through fake charities.
Some of the money eventually went into illegal adoption operations.
Olivia's sister discovered the transfers by accident.
When she tried to report them, people threatened her.
“She was pregnant,” Daniel said.
“She knew they could hurt the babies.”
Olivia covered her mouth.
“She came to me because she trusted me.”
“What was in the envelope?” Caleb asked.
Daniel looked at him.
“Evidence.”
“What kind?”
“Bank records. Names. Account numbers. Contracts.”
“Where is it?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“Your sister hid it.”
Olivia frowned.
“Where?”
Daniel looked at the necklace.
“She gave you the key.”
Olivia touched the silver necklace.
A tiny compartment opened beneath the pendant.
Inside was a miniature key.
Her hands trembled.
Daniel continued.
“Your sister knew she might not survive.”
Olivia began crying.
“She told me to make sure you got the children.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Victor Lang was watching you.”
Daniel explained that after Olivia's sister died, Victor tried to have the triplets removed from Olivia's care.
Daniel secretly financed the emergency legal defense.
He also arranged for an anonymous donor to pay Olivia's immediate expenses.
Caleb suddenly understood.
“That was you.”
Daniel nodded.
“I didn't have much money, but I had enough to keep them safe.”
Olivia stared at him.
“You saved us.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Your sister did.”
He handed Olivia an old envelope.
“She left this for you.”
Olivia opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Her sister's handwriting.
Olivia,
If you are reading this, then I didn't get to see you raise my children.
I'm sorry.
But I know you.
You will think you're not strong enough. You will think the world is too big and too cruel. Don't believe it.
Those babies don't need a perfect mother. They need you.
Olivia could no longer read.
Caleb gently held her.
Daniel looked away.
“She loved you very much.”
Olivia wiped her tears.
“Why did you disappear?”
Daniel's expression darkened.
“Because Victor found me.”
He explained that he had been imprisoned by people connected to the network.
He escaped months later but remained hidden because he feared returning would expose Olivia and the children.
Now he had finally decided to come forward.
Caleb stood.
“Then we're ending this.”
Daniel looked at him.
“How?”
Caleb held up the key.
“We find the evidence.”
The key opened a storage box inside an old railway station.
Inside was a collection of documents.
Enough to destroy the entire network.
But there was one final surprise.
Among the documents was a photograph of Victor Lang.
Standing beside him was someone Olivia never expected.
Her sister's husband.
The father of the triplets.
