Chapter 19 - The PromiseOn the tenth anniversary of the day Caleb found Olivia in the square, he took her back there.

The fountain was still there.
The bench had been replaced, but the square looked almost exactly the same.
Olivia stood quietly beside him.
“I can't believe it's been ten years.”
“Neither can I.”
Caleb reached into his coat.
He wasn't proposing.
They had already been married for years.
Instead, he pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Olivia asleep on the bench.
The original photograph Caleb had taken that day.
Olivia laughed.
“You kept that?”
“Of course.”
“I look exhausted.”
“You were.”
She looked at the photograph.
Then she looked at Caleb.
“You changed my life.”
He shook his head.
“You changed mine.”
They sat together.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Caleb said:
“Do you remember what you told me that day?”
“What?”
“That you'd be at work tomorrow.”
Olivia smiled.
“I was worried about losing my job.”
“And I thought you were worried about disappointing me.”
“I was.”
Caleb looked at her.
“You never had to earn kindness.”
Olivia's eyes filled with tears.
“I know that now.”
They returned home that evening.
The children had prepared a surprise.
There were flowers.
Photographs.
A huge cake.
And a handmade banner that read:
TEN YEARS OF FAMILY.
Olivia cried.
Caleb laughed.
The children hugged them.
For a moment, everything was perfect.
