Chapter 1 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOORS

The double doors opened completely.
Raymond Saint Claire stepped into the maternity hallway.
He wore no white coat.
No security badge hung from his neck.
He did not need either one.
Every employee on the floor recognized the silver-haired man walking behind the security officers.
Raymond Saint Claire was the chairman of the hospital board.
He controlled the medical center’s land, its research foundation, its executive appointments, and every major contract signed beneath its roof.
More importantly, he was Emily’s uncle.
Raymond’s eyes moved first to Emily’s pale face.
Then to the hand beneath her stomach.
Then to the dark mark spreading across her maternity dress.
His expression did not change.
That frightened Preston more than anger would have.
Raymond stopped several feet away.
“Who touched her?”
No one answered.
The nurse behind the desk swallowed hard.
“Sir, the security camera recorded everything.”
Raymond looked toward Preston.
“Did you allow someone to assault your pregnant wife?”
Preston straightened his shoulders.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“She became aggressive.”
Emily finally looked at her.
“I did not touch you.”
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“You were blocking the hallway.”
Raymond turned toward the security supervisor.
“Lock this floor.”
Preston stared at him.
“You cannot lock down my family’s hospital.”
Raymond’s gaze settled on him.
“This institution has never belonged to your family.”
Silence fell again.
Preston laughed once.
It was a nervous sound.
“The Whitmores financed this pavilion.”
“No.”
Raymond stepped closer.
“The Whitmores borrowed the appearance of ownership.”
“This building stands on Saint Claire land.”
“The operating license is held by the Saint Claire Foundation.”
“The Whitmore name remains on the wall because my sister believed your grandfather deserved public recognition.”
Emily’s late mother had been Raymond’s younger sister.
Preston’s face slowly lost its color.
Raymond turned to Emily.
“Are you bleeding?”
“I don’t know.”
“The baby moved.”
“That is all I know.”
Raymond raised one hand.
A medical team emerged from the maternity unit immediately.
A doctor guided Emily toward a wheelchair.
Preston moved forward.
“I’m her husband.”
Raymond blocked him.
“You were her husband when you watched her get kicked.”
“You can wait behind security.”
Vanessa’s confidence began to crack.
“This is ridiculous.”
Raymond looked at her designer heel.
“No.”
“What you did was criminal.”
Security officers stepped around Vanessa.
One removed the bracelet from her wrist after she tried to hide something beneath her sleeve.
A hospital identification card fell to the floor.
It belonged to Dr. Natalie Brooks.
Vanessa was not a patient.
She had entered a restricted maternity floor using a stolen employee badge.
Raymond picked up the card.
Then he looked at Preston.
“You brought her through a secure entrance.”
Preston said nothing.
Emily was pushed toward the examination room.
Before the doors closed, she looked at her husband.
“You told me I did not belong here.”
May you like
Her voice remained quiet.
“Now we are going to find out why you were so afraid I came.”
