Chapter 17 - THE WOMAN IN WHITE
Vanessa accepted a plea agreement.
She admitted assaulting Emily.
She admitted entering the restricted floor with a stolen badge.
She admitted helping Preston intimidate witnesses.
She denied knowing about the infant transfer plan until the day of Emily’s appointment.
Evidence supported part of her claim.
It did not erase the kick.
At sentencing, Vanessa requested permission to speak.
Emily attended remotely.
Vanessa wore a plain jail uniform.
The white cashmere coat was gone.
The diamond bracelet had been seized as evidence in a financial-fraud investigation.
“I hated Emily because Preston told me she was weak.”
Vanessa looked toward the camera.
“He said she trapped him.”
“He said the pregnancy was strategic.”
“He said he stayed married only because she carried valuable blood.”
Emily listened without expression.
Vanessa continued.
“I believed him because believing him made me feel chosen.”
“I thought his family’s power would become mine.”
“When she came to the hospital, I wanted her humiliated.”
“I kicked her because I wanted her to understand I had replaced her.”
Vanessa began crying.
“I did not understand that I was helping them treat another woman’s body like property.”
Emily muted the screen.
The apology did not require an answer.
Vanessa received seven years in prison.
She was prohibited from contacting Emily.
Dr. Price received a longer sentence for falsifying psychiatric records and attempting to flee.
The false doctor who entered the operating room was convicted of attempted assault and medical sabotage.
Preston’s sentencing remained pending because of his cooperation.
His attorney requested fifteen years.
Prosecutors requested thirty.
Emily submitted a written statement.
She did not ask for revenge.
She described the moment in the hallway.
“My husband watched a woman kick me while I carried his son.”
“He did not move because my pain supported his plan.”
“That moment explains every document that came after it.”
“He saw me as an obstacle.”
“He saw our child as an asset.”
“He saw marriage as access.”
“A sentence should reflect not only what he intended to gain.”
“It should reflect everything he was willing to erase.”
The judge sentenced Preston to twenty-six years.
He lost all parental rights.
He was ordered to pay restitution.
Before he was removed, he asked to speak with Raymond.
Raymond refused.
He asked to speak with Emily.
She refused.
Then he asked for a photograph of Noah.
Emily considered it for one night.
