Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM REVOLT

The hospital board called an emergency meeting.

Several members demanded Raymond resign.

They argued he had concealed Malcolm’s earlier crimes.

They were correct.

Raymond entered the boardroom without an attorney.

Emily attended through video from Noah’s room.

The board’s senior member spoke first.

“You knew the research program harmed patients.”

“I knew enough to close it.”

“You did not report it.”

“No.”

“You allowed Malcolm to remain chief medical officer.”

“Yes.”

“Why should this institution trust you?”

Raymond looked toward Emily’s image on the screen.

“It should not trust me because of my name.”

“It should judge my decisions.”

“And one of my decisions allowed this danger to grow.”

He placed his resignation letter on the table.

Emily was surprised.

Raymond had controlled the hospital for decades.

The board expected him to fight.

He did not.

“I will remain only long enough to secure patient safety and cooperate with investigators.”

“Then I will step down.”

A board member asked who should replace him.

Raymond answered,

“Someone who does not inherit the position.”

He proposed an independent national search.

He also proposed a permanent patient-rights council with authority to review executive decisions.

Half of the council would consist of former patients.

The board approved both measures.

Raymond surrendered control voluntarily.

Preston had always believed power was proven by refusing to release it.

Raymond showed Emily another version.

Real power could admit when it had become unsafe.

After the meeting, Emily called him.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

“But I will be.”

“You lost the hospital.”

“I lost the right to call it mine years ago.”

He looked toward Noah’s incubator.

“You gave me the chance to stop lying about that.”

Emily remained quiet.

Then she said,

“I was angry with you.”

“You should be.”

“I still am.”

“I know.”

“But you came when I called.”

Raymond’s eyes filled.

“I should have come before you needed to call.”

The hospital launched a compensation fund for victims of unauthorized research.

Every affected family received independent legal representation.

Medical records were returned to patient control.

The hidden neonatal level was closed permanently.

Its rooms would later become an archive documenting medical abuse.

Emily requested one condition.

Her mother’s recording would be preserved.

Not as evidence alone.

As testimony.

Rose Saint Claire had been silenced during childbirth.

Her voice would remain inside the institution forever.
