Chapter 15 - PRESTON’S CONFESSION

Preston’s attorney approached prosecutors with an offer.

Preston would testify against Malcolm.

In exchange, he wanted reduced charges.

The prosecutor asked Emily whether she wished to hear his proposed statement.

She agreed.

Preston entered the interview room wearing jail clothing.

His expensive suits were gone.

His hair was uncombed.

For the first time since Emily met him, he looked ordinary.

He began by describing Malcolm’s control.

His father had selected his schools.

His career.

His friendships.

Even his marriage.

“When he showed me Emily’s file, I refused at first.”

Emily watched through one-way glass.

Preston continued.

“Then he said marrying her would secure the research.”

“He said I would lead Whitmore Biotech.”

“Did you love her?” the prosecutor asked.

Preston lowered his head.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“I do not know.”

“Did you tell her why you approached her?”

“No.”

“Did you participate in moving her medical records?”

“Yes.”

“Did you forge her signatures?”

“Yes.”

“Did you authorize the insurance policy?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know her baby would be transferred?”

“Yes.”

Emily pressed one hand against the glass.

Preston’s voice became quieter.

“I told myself Noah would receive the best treatment.”

“I told myself Emily would understand later.”

“You planned to declare her mentally incompetent.”

“Yes.”

“You brought Vanessa to the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Vanessa would assault her?”

“No.”

The prosecutor placed the hallway video on the screen.

“Why did you not intervene?”

Preston watched himself standing beside Vanessa.

Emily held the railing.

The kick landed.

He remained motionless.

His face broke.

“Because I was angry.”

“At whom?”

“At Emily.”

“Why?”

“She was going to revoke my authority.”

The truth finally appeared without decoration.

Preston watched his wife get kicked because she threatened his control.

The prosecutor asked whether he deserved a reduced sentence.

Preston looked toward the one-way glass.

He knew Emily stood behind it.

“No.”

His attorney touched his shoulder.

Preston continued.

“I want to testify anyway.”

“Why?”

“My father will do this again if he believes he can.”

Emily left before the interview ended.

She did not need to hear Preston describe regret.

His cooperation might help other families.

It did not rebuild their marriage.

That evening, Noah opened his eyes for several seconds.

Emily placed one finger inside his hand.

His tiny fingers closed around it.

Preston had entered her life because of blood.

May you like

Noah would grow up knowing blood did not define love.

Choices did.
