Chapter 16 - The Digital Trail

Martin’s voice echoed through the speakerphone, dismantling Vanessa’s entire world piece by piece.
“Ms. Vale explicitly directed three separate wedding vendors to add false consulting fees to their invoices, totaling two hundred and forty thousand dollars,” Martin explained methodically. “Those excess fees were then routed directly to a newly formed event-planning agency owned entirely by her brother.”
Vanessa took a staggering step backward, bumping into the wall. “That is a lie! You are framing me!”
I reached into a drawer in the marble table, pulling out a manila envelope I had prepared that morning. I tossed the bank records and incorporation documents onto the table.
“Your brother’s agency was legally formed exactly eleven days after your engagement to Daniel,” I said coldly.
Daniel picked up the papers. As his eyes scanned the highlighted bank transfers, he seemed to age ten years in a matter of seconds. The betrayal was absolute, cutting him deeper than any knife could.
Vanessa, realizing the walls were closing in, fell back on her last weapon: manipulation. She forced tears to well up in her eyes, letting out a pathetic sob.
“Daniel, please,” she cried, reaching out to him with shaking hands. “Your mother hates me! She set this entire thing up to ruin us! You have to believe me, I did it for us, to build a nest egg!”
Daniel looked up from the papers. He didn't look angry anymore; he just looked incredibly tired.
“No, Vanessa,” he said quietly, stepping out of her reach. “She gave you privacy. You showed her exactly who you are.”

Her fake tears stopped instantly. The crying act vanished, replaced by pure, toxic venom.
“You weak, pathetic little boy,” she spat at him, her true nature fully unmasked. “Without me, you’re nothing but your mother’s obedient heir. You need me to be a real man.”
