Chapter 31

With Elias Vance’s glowing article acting as a catalyst, the foundation entered a period of unprecedented growth. Donations poured in from across the country, and city officials were eager to fast-track our permits for the low-income housing initiative.

Six months passed in a whirlwind of groundbreaking ceremonies, budget approvals, and community outreach programs. Daniel managed everything with a calm, decisive brilliance. He and Clara had seamlessly transitioned from professional partners to a formidable couple, their relationship grounded in shared values and quiet, late-night dinners discussing architectural plans and social policies.

One crisp autumn morning, I sat in my study, looking around at the walls lined with decades of foundation history. Photographs of my late husband, plaques from various charities, and the small shadowbox containing the piece of the gray cleaning uniform.

I realized, with a profound sense of peace, that my phone hadn't rung with an emergency in over a month. Daniel wasn't asking for my final approval on budgets anymore; he was simply informing me of his successful decisions. Rosa was managing the household staff with flawless precision.

They didn't need me to protect them anymore.

I walked out to the sunroom, where Daniel was having a quick breakfast before heading to the office. Clara was sitting beside him, laughing as she tried to steal a piece of his toast.

"Good morning, you two," I smiled, walking into the warm, sunlit room.

"Morning, Mom," Daniel said, kissing Clara’s cheek before turning to me. "I just got off the phone with the mayor. The housing project is officially three weeks ahead of schedule."

"That is wonderful news, darling," I said, taking a seat opposite them. "Which makes this the perfect time for me to share my news."

They both looked at me, giving me their full attention.

"I have decided to officially step down from the advisory board," I announced, my voice steady and light. "I am taking an indefinite leave of absence. I’ve booked a flight to Tuscany for next week. I plan to spend the next six months traveling through Europe, painting, and drinking entirely too much wine."

Daniel stared at me, his mouth slightly open in surprise. "Mom... are you serious? You're retiring?"

"I am," I smiled, feeling a joyous freedom expanding in my chest. "The foundation is in the best hands it has ever been in. This house is full of life and love. My job here is finally done."
