Chapter 32

The week before my departure was filled with a flurry of packing and quiet, emotional goodbyes. Rosa helped me organize my vintage trunks, her hands moving expertly as she folded cashmere sweaters and evening gowns.

"I cannot believe you are actually leaving, Mrs. Whitmore," Rosa said, pausing to wipe a small tear from her eye. "This house will feel incredibly empty without you."

"Nonsense, Rosa," I laughed gently, placing a hand on her shoulder. "This house is about to be fuller than ever. You keep an eye on Daniel and Clara for me. And remember, you are the boss of this estate now. Do not let them skip meals when they are obsessing over their blueprints."

"I will make sure they eat, ma'am. I promise," Rosa smiled warmly.

On the morning of my flight, Daniel drove me to the airport himself. The drive was quiet, filled with the comfortable silence of a mother and son who completely understood each other.

When we reached the private terminal, Daniel pulled my luggage from the trunk. He looked at me, his strong features softening with emotion.

"I'm going to miss you, Mom," Daniel said, pulling me into a tight, fierce embrace. "Thank you. For protecting me when I was blind, and for trusting me when I finally opened my eyes."

"You are my greatest pride, Daniel," I whispered, holding him close. "You survived the fire, and you built a fortress. Don't ever doubt yourself again."

I pulled back and touched his cheek. "Take care of Clara. She is a remarkably rare woman."

"I will," Daniel promised, a genuine, deep love shining in his eyes at the mention of her name.

I walked through the terminal doors, not looking back. I didn't need to. I knew exactly what I was leaving behind: a legacy secured by integrity, a son who had become a true leader, and a home that was finally, completely clean.

As the plane took off, soaring above the clouds toward Italy, I opened a new leather journal. For the first time in thirty years, I wasn't writing down foundation minutes or household schedules. I was simply writing my own story.
