Chapter 33

With Eleanor exploring the vineyards of Tuscany, the massive Whitmore estate grew quiet, but it was a warm, comforting quiet. Daniel and Clara’s relationship blossomed away from the intense scrutiny of the foundation’s boardrooms.

Unlike Vanessa, who had demanded constant entertainment, expensive gifts, and flashy public appearances, Clara found joy in the simplest moments. One Friday evening, after a grueling week of finalizing construction contracts, Daniel found Clara in the massive estate kitchen, wearing one of his old oversized sweaters, attempting to cook pasta.

"Rosa took the night off, so I decided to take charge," Clara announced proudly, stirring a pot of boiling water. "Though, I think I may have misjudged the garlic-to-tomato ratio."

Daniel chuckled, walking up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. The kitchen smelled incredible, a mix of roasting vegetables and warm spices.

"It smells perfect," Daniel murmured, pressing a soft kiss to her neck. "You didn't have to cook. We could have ordered in."

"I wanted to cook for you," Clara smiled, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "Besides, I think it’s important we remember how to do things for ourselves. Living in this massive house... it would be so easy to lose touch with reality."

Daniel’s smile softened into a look of profound adoration. That was the beauty of Clara. She kept him entirely grounded. She loved him for the man he was in the quiet moments, not the billionaire CEO on the cover of magazines.

They ate at the small island counter in the kitchen, rather than the sprawling formal dining room. They drank a modest bottle of red wine, laughing as they debated the optimal layout for the playground at the new housing complex.

"I still say we need a splash pad," Clara argued playfully, pointing her fork at him. "The kids will love it in the summer."

"And the maintenance costs will give the accounting department a collective heart attack," Daniel countered, his eyes crinkling with amusement. "But... if you can find a way to make it solar-powered, I'll approve the budget."

Clara beamed, a radiant, triumphant smile. "Challenge accepted, Mr. Whitmore."

As Daniel looked at her, laughing in his kitchen, completely unbothered by the lack of fine china or expensive caviar, he knew with absolute certainty that he wanted to spend the rest of his life arguing over splash pads with this woman.
