Chapter 12 - Grant Mercer Loses His Name on the Building
The district did something nobody expected.
It reviewed naming rights.
The Mercer Athletic Center had been named after Grant’s family under a donation agreement.
The contract allowed removal if the donor engaged in conduct materially damaging to the school’s educational mission.
Grant threatened litigation.
The district proceeded anyway.
Not because his son bullied Maya.
Because Grant used donor influence to interfere with student discipline and accessed information he should not have received.
The board voted six to one.
The sign came down.
Students watched workers remove:
MERCER ATHLETIC CENTER.
The building became simply:
Westfield Athletics Center.
Grant released a statement accusing the district of political theater.
Nobody cared much.
His money still existed.
His companies still existed.
His life did not collapse.
That was important.
Justice did not require fictional destruction.
It required boundaries.
Grant could donate.
