Chapter 9 - Maya Speaks Without Sound

When Maya returned to school, students lined the hallway.

I hated it immediately.

She was not a celebrity.

She was a student.

I asked everyone to move.

Maya typed.

Her tablet said:

“Please stop staring.”

They did.

That simple request mattered.

The school assigned an aide for transition support.

Maya refused permanent shadowing.

She did not want another adult following her everywhere.

Instead, she requested three things.

A faster way to report harassment.

A backup communication tablet stored with the nurse.

And permission to leave any room where students blocked access to her device.

The district approved all three.

Then she asked for something harder.

She wanted to address my class.

No assembly.

No cameras.

Just Room 214.

The students sat quietly.

Maya stood near my desk.

The bruise had faded yellow.

Her replacement tablet hung from a new green lanyard.

She typed for almost a minute.

Then the voice began.

“I know some of you heard Jackson before the day he hit me.”

No one moved.

“I know some of you were afraid.”

Ava started crying.

Maya continued.

“I was afraid too.”

“I am not mad because you were afraid.”

“I am mad because adults made you think telling would not matter.”

I looked down.

The words hit me too.

Then:

“I do not want everyone to treat me like I am fragile.”

“I want you to treat me like you would want people to treat you.”

“No touching my tablet.”

“No finishing messages for me.”

“No pretending I do not understand because I take longer to answer.”

“And no telling me I am brave every time I come to school.”

A few students smiled.

Then Maya typed one final message.

“I am tired of being brave.”

“I would like to be normal sometimes.”

Nobody clapped.

Thank God.

They simply listened.

May you like

That was what she asked for from the beginning.
