Chapter 15 - The Tablet Ceremony That Wasn’t

The district wanted to honor Maya at the end-of-year awards ceremony.
Student courage award.
Public recognition.
Standing ovation.
Simone asked Maya.
Maya typed:
“No.”
The superintendent looked disappointed.
“What would you prefer?”
Maya thought.
Then typed:
“Fix the reporting system.”
So they did.
The district introduced a protected student-reporting platform.
Reports involving disability harassment automatically went to both building administrators and a district-level coordinator.
No single principal could quietly close them.
Parents received status updates.
Students could attach audio, screenshots, or written descriptions.
Communication-device users received direct access tools.
The program was not named after Maya.
She insisted.
“I do not want students thinking they need to get punched before adults improve something.”
