Chapter 14 - What Happened to Mr. Davis

Grant Mercer’s threatened lawsuit against me disappeared.
My job did not.
But the investigation found something uncomfortable.
I had followed policy.
Too carefully.
I documented.
Reported.
Waited.
When administration failed, I should have escalated beyond the building.
That realization stayed with me.
I asked the superintendent to add mandatory escalation training for staff when vulnerable students report repeated harassment.
She agreed.
Then I changed one thing in my classroom.
A sign beside the door.
Not inspirational.
Not cute.
Just four sentences.
If you tell me someone is hurting you, I will listen.
If I cannot fix it alone, I will ask for help.
If the first adult does not respond, I will ask another.
Silence is not proof that nothing happened.
Maya read it on the first day it went up.
Then typed:
“Better.”
May you like
That was the highest compliment she gave me all year.
