PART 1 — The Woman Who Wasn't Allowed to Be Sick

Clara Bennett never imagined that surviving emergency surgery would become easier than surviving her own marriage.

Only forty-eight hours earlier, doctors had nearly lost her after internal bleeding caused by what Ryan insisted was "just an accident."

Now she lay inside a quiet hospital room, connected to IV lines, barely able to breathe without pain.

For the first time in months...

She felt safe.

No arguments.

No shouting.

No Eleanor Lancaster.

Ryan's mother had controlled every day of Clara's marriage.

She decided what Clara wore.

Where they lived.

How much money Clara could spend.

Even whether Clara was "allowed" to visit her own parents.

Ryan always had one answer.

"She's my mother."

That sentence had become Clara's prison.

The nurse adjusted Clara's medication.

"You need complete rest."

Clara smiled weakly.

"I finally can."

She was wrong.

The hospital room door burst open without warning.

Ryan stormed inside.

Still wearing an expensive tailored suit.

Still checking his phone before looking at his wife.

"There you are."

Not...

"How are you?"

Not...

"I was worried."

His first words were:

"Get dressed."

Clara stared.

"What?"

Ryan sighed dramatically.

"Mom's birthday dinner starts in an hour."

"You have to come."

Clara actually thought he was joking.

"I just had surgery."

"You'll sit."

"I can't even walk."

"You'll manage."

The nurse immediately stepped between them.

"Sir, your wife cannot leave."

Ryan ignored her.

"Family comes first."

Clara whispered,

"I almost died."

Ryan rolled his eyes.

"And you're still alive."

"So stop making everything about yourself."

Those words shattered something inside her.

Then...

He grabbed her wrist.

Hard.

Pain shot through her IV arm.

"Ryan..."

"Stand up."

She cried out.

The nurse raised her voice.

"Let go of her NOW."

Ryan tightened his grip.

"She's my wife."

"I'll decide."

The hallway filled with people.

Another nurse arrived.

Hospital security was called.

Ryan refused to move.

"Mom already reserved your seat."

"You embarrassed her by getting hospitalized this week."

Clara couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"I'm embarrassing HER?"

Ryan leaned closer.

"You've ruined enough."

"Don't ruin tonight."

He began pulling her toward the edge of the bed.

The stitches in her abdomen burned.

She screamed.

At that exact moment...

The door opened again.

Not security.

Not another doctor.

A man wearing a dark gray coat stepped inside.

Behind him...

Two uniformed officers.

The room fell silent.

The stranger placed a leather folder on the bedside table.

"Ryan Lancaster?"

Ryan frowned.

"Who are you?"

The man calmly opened a badge.

"Detective Daniel Hayes."

"I'm here regarding an ongoing investigation."

Ryan laughed.

"This isn't the time."

The detective didn't smile.

"It is for you."

He slowly slid several photographs across the table.

Ryan looked down.

His face changed instantly.

All color disappeared.

Because the first picture showed something...

No one else in that room understood.

But Ryan did.

May you like

And he suddenly realized...

His worst nightmare had finally found him.
