Chapter 1 - DINNER WAS THE LAST STRAW

Emma Carter had spent eleven months pretending everything was normal.

Pretending Ryan's temper only appeared when he was stressed. Pretending his apologies meant something. Pretending every broken plate, every slammed door, and every cruel sentence would somehow be the last.

By the time autumn arrived in Columbus, Ohio, she had become an expert at pretending.

The townhouse looked perfect from the street. Warm light spilled through the front windows. A wreath hung neatly on the door. Inside, roasted chicken and rosemary filled the kitchen while wine glasses caught the glow above the marble island.

Ryan's younger sister, Chloe, sat at the dining table with both hands around a glass she had not touched. She was twenty-four, blonde, slight, and unusually quiet. She had arrived fifteen minutes earlier carrying no overnight bag, although Ryan had said she planned to stay for the weekend.

Emma noticed the bruise-colored shadow beneath Chloe's sleeve when she reached for a napkin. She also noticed how quickly Chloe pulled the fabric down.

Ryan entered the kitchen and looked at the table as if inspecting hired work.

"Why isn't Chloe's plate ready?"

"It's on the table," Emma said.

"I meant serve her."

Chloe's face tightened. "Ryan, I can serve myself."

He ignored her and looked only at Emma. "Serve my sister."

Emma held the dinner plate in both hands. For months she had obeyed small commands because resisting them always cost more than complying. Bring my coffee. Cancel your meeting. Don't wear that. Stop talking to him. Smile when my mother comes over.

That night something inside her refused.

"No."

Ryan crossed the kitchen in two strides and slapped her.

The plate slipped. Emma caught it against the counter, stared at her husband, then slammed it onto the marble island. Porcelain shattered across the surface.

"I won't be your servant."

Ryan stepped toward her. Chloe moved first. She snatched Emma's phone from beside the fruit bowl and hid it behind her back.

"Give me that phone!" Ryan shouted.

When Chloe refused, he grabbed her wrist. Emma rushed between them and forced his hand away. Ryan stumbled into the counter, more shocked by defiance than by the movement itself.

Then pounding shook the front door.

"Columbus Police! Open the door!"

Ryan froze.

Red and blue light flashed through the living-room window. Chloe held the phone against her chest, trembling.

Emma looked at her. "You called them?"

Chloe's eyes filled with fear. "I should've warned you."

"Warned me about what?"

Ryan stared at his sister as if she had betrayed him in a way far larger than calling 911.

The pounding continued.

Emma stood between them, one cheek burning, and understood that the police had not come only because of what happened in the kitchen.

They had come because of Melissa.

Melissa Carter, Ryan's first wife, had vanished three years earlier.

And Chloe had finally decided to tell someone what she knew.
