Chapter 6 - CHLOE'S LAST MESSAGE

Security footage showed Chloe leaving the hotel alone at 6:12 that morning. She wore a hooded sweatshirt and carried no bag. A dark sedan stopped at the curb. Chloe entered willingly.

The driver was Robert Carter.

He told police Ryan had called Elaine and threatened to kill himself unless Chloe came to speak with him. Robert believed he could calm his son and drove Chloe to an abandoned Buckeye Restoration warehouse.

When they arrived, Ryan took Robert's keys, locked him in an office, and drove away with Chloe.

Robert escaped through a window two hours later.

Emma wanted to hate him, but his face already carried the full weight of what his choices had done.

Detective Bell found one unsent voice memo on Chloe's cloud account, recorded minutes before she left the hotel.

"Emma, if you're hearing this, Ryan contacted Dad. He says he knows where Melissa is. I have to go because I think he will hurt her if I don't. I know this is stupid. Please don't follow me. Give the blue key to Detective Bell."

The blue key was not the locker key. Emma found it sewn into the lining of Chloe's vest.

It opened a safe-deposit box rented under Elaine's name.

Inside were passports for Ryan and Chloe, forty thousand dollars, a map of rural roads near the Ohio River, and a recent photograph of Melissa standing outside a grocery store.

On the back, someone had written: SHE TALKS, WE ALL FALL.

Elaine admitted Ryan had forced her to rent the box. He said it contained emergency funds for the family. She never opened it.

The map marked an old hunting cabin owned by Robert's late brother.

A tactical team reached the cabin just before dark. They found signs of recent occupation, two cups of coffee, Chloe's scarf, and a burner phone. Ryan and Chloe were gone.

The burner phone contained one outgoing text to Emma.

COME ALONE OR CHLOE LEARNS WHAT MELISSA LEARNED.

Bell ordered Emma not to respond. Ryan expected fear to make her predictable. Instead, investigators used the message to trace the phone's location through a delayed network handshake.

The signal pointed to a closed riverside motel outside Portsmouth.

Emma remained in the command vehicle while officers entered. She heard the radio traffic in fragments: second floor clear, room twelve empty, movement behind office.

Then Chloe's scream came through an open microphone.

Emma stopped breathing.

Seconds later an officer announced that Chloe was safe. Ryan had escaped through a maintenance door and reached the riverbank before disappearing into heavy woods.

Chloe had a cut on her wrist from the plastic restraint, but no serious injuries. She told police Ryan kept repeating that Melissa had ruined everything by surviving.

"He said he was going to finish it," Chloe whispered.

"Did he say where?" Bell asked.

Chloe nodded.

"At Emma's studio. He thinks Melissa will come there because she sent the first warning."

Emma stared at her.

"What warning?"

Chloe swallowed. "The anonymous message you received the night before your wedding. The one that said, Ask him what happened to Melissa."

Emma had deleted it after Ryan convinced her it was harassment from a jealous ex-client.

Melissa had tried to save her before she married him.
