Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT IN EMMA'S NAME
The answer began with an account Emma had never opened.
A forensic accountant traced Buckeye Restoration Group payments into a private investment vehicle called North Line Holdings. North Line had been formed two months before Melissa disappeared. Its articles listed Ryan as manager and Emma Lawson as beneficiary.
Lawson was Emma's maiden name.
The signature attached to the formation documents was not hers.
Emma remembered Ryan asking her to sign a sponsorship form at the charity auction where they met. She had written her name on a clipboard while he held the pages. The document she saw had been a donor-release form. The signature in North Line's records looked copied from that night.
North Line had received deposits from Melissa's home-equity line, Buckeye Restoration, and three elderly clients connected to Ryan's real-estate work. The money was moved repeatedly, then used to purchase distressed properties through shell companies.
"He made you the beneficiary so he could blame you if the accounts were discovered," the accountant said.
Emma stared at the screen. "Before he even introduced himself."
Detective Bell nodded. "Melissa may have found the structure. Her journal says she discovered a folder labeled E.L. six weeks before she vanished."
Chloe's parents, Robert and Elaine Carter, were brought in for questioning. Robert denied knowing anything about the shell companies. Elaine cried and repeated that Ryan had always protected the family.
But the records told a different story. Buckeye Restoration had transferred nearly four hundred thousand dollars into North Line. Robert's electronic signature appeared on every authorization.
When confronted, he admitted Ryan had told him the transfers were temporary and necessary to hide assets from a lawsuit. He had signed without reading.
"Did Melissa know?" Bell asked.
Robert covered his face. "She came to my office. She said Ryan was stealing. I told her marriage required loyalty."
Chloe stared at her father with open disgust.
Elaine whispered, "We thought she was trying to ruin him."
"So you helped him ruin her," Chloe said.
Robert then revealed something worse. On the night Melissa disappeared, Ryan arrived at his parents' house after midnight with mud on his shoes and a torn shirt. He said Melissa had attacked him and fled. Robert gave him clean clothes and burned the torn shirt in the backyard fire pit.
Elaine had washed his shoes.
Neither parent called the police.
They had told themselves they were protecting their son from a false accusation.
Detective Bell asked where Ryan's truck had gone.
Robert said it was sold for scrap two weeks later after an unexplained engine fire.
The case shifted from an old missing-person investigation to a suspected conspiracy involving fraud, evidence destruction, and possible homicide.
Emma obtained a temporary protection order and returned to the townhouse with police to collect her work files. Ryan had already emptied the bedroom safe and removed the home computer.
He left one item behind on the kitchen island: the broken dinner plate, carefully arranged in a circle.
At its center lay Melissa's wedding ring.
